Plans for this Gothic were started last year after the election of the editor and business manager. Ned Bowman BAND The familiar shout of Who's band are you in? could be heard from the far end ot' the football field f then a flash of blue and gold could be seen as the Elegant Eighty came strutting down the field. The band be- gan a memorable year by marching at all the home football games and also the one at Wiley of Terre Haute. At every home basket- ball gatne the band could be found sitting in their own private balcony playing that snazzy pep song we all like so well. Besides playing at all the games. the band also takes part in pep sessions. convocations. concerts, and at commencement. This year they haxe taken sexeral enjoyable trips. including their participation at the Ellettsyille l-'all Festival and the Illonon Centennial Celebration at New Albany. The band. under the direction of Mr. Carl Frye. further displayed their musical ability at the Winter and Spring t'oncerts. The band and orchestra parties that were el I during the year helped to make this 5 ' ess- SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS Sing and be happy. This is the motto of the chorus, which started its activities by be- ing represented at the Indiana State Teachers Association. Over eight hundred students from Indiana High School's participated in this festival chorus under the direction of Don Craig. assistant to Fred Waring. The chorus revived and presented the old high school song, Boost for Bloomington High at a pep session. At Christmas season th ey presented selections at convocations and for Parent- Teacher meetings. They also went caroling at the hospital. nursing homes. and several residences. On the eve of Christmas vacation, they earoled in the corridors throughout the school. ln April the chorus was host to the Dis- trict Choral Festival which was held in Recital Hall at Indiana Vniversity. Frye, consists of fifty-seven members, and it is an active organization. Every spring and fall the Orchestra gives a joint con- cert with the band. Also, the Orchestra plays between acts during the night performances of the three-act-plays. When the Baccalaureate services are held each spring in the Indiana University Auditorium. the orchestra, with the University School Orchestra. performs for these services. The orchestra is operated on a club basis. in that each semester. officers are elected. JUNIOR HIGH CHORUS With quaking knees and squeaking voices, seventh and eighth grade students tried out for the Junior High Glee Club. as member- ship is on a competitive basis. The P.-T.A. eiiioyetl a brief program by this group in November. and the singing of carols in the auditorium helped to spread the Christmas spirit tlirfvtiglifvtit the school. VBI' Ill The 1947 football season ended this tear as one of the most triumphant and successful football teams in the history of Bloomington High School. The persons greatly responsible for this excellent training and accomplishment were Coach Fred Huff Jr., and his loyal assist- ants Thc old saying Practice makes perfcct paid off when the Huffmen set a defenslxe record ot hating not been scored upon or defeated in seven consecutixe games A big threat came when Lawrenceburg in xaded the Panthers w1th an unscored upon and undefeated record The Panthers Wlth anxious determination easily relinquished Lawrence burg s two records and continued theirs There were times when both teams refused to be de feated or scored against Our loyal fans will and VViley of Terre Haute. Linton was the 'V ' to hold the honor of stepping across our twenty- yard line. The Miners went even so far as to dirty our clean record and score a touchdown, but they did not break our undefeated record. JAMES DEARRING f Senior Guard, was one of the greatest guards and rebounders ever to wear the Purple. He made the all Regional team with his outstanding team-work. JACK CRANDALL -f Sophomore Centerg was chosen the second Semi-Final center. He could be counted upon to play a cool game when going got tough. HVBERT CVNNINGHAM f Senior Forward,- whose fine defensive play and ability to make points when they were needed won him a position on the all Regional Team. CII.-1 HLES JOHNSON -f Senior Foru'urd,' aided the Panther's through his bank board control and his constant hitting of the basket. JOHN HHOGNI-IAVX ' Coa1'h,' was basketball letter winner in high school and college. As head of the athletic department, he had one of the most successful seasons of coaching. JACK PHILLIPS f Senior Forwardg was able to match any man in team spirit. He went into the game when we were in a tight spot and came through. AUSTIN STEPHENS -f Senior Guardg always proved capable when called upon, especially dur- ing the explosive spots in the tournament. RICHARD BELL ' Junior Forwurdg broke in the line-up in many games and was usually good for several points. DON LYON I Junior Guardg smallest man on the team, was used when the Panthers needed a few extra points.
