COLONEL DONALD L. SIMON Lt. Colonel Donald L. Simon, principal of Bloom- ington High School, was called to active duty in the Army Air Corps July 1942. We give you his personal Message to the Students written after a surprise visit to the school on Sunday morning, April 2. A MESSAGE TO THE STUDENTS Recently I visited the Bloomington High School. You were not there, as it was Sunday morning. M1'. Binford accompanied me on a tour through the buildings. How pleased I was to see the progress you have made! I longed to be back in the principal's office-to share again with you the pride that comes from feeling that THIS IS MY SCHOOL! During the two years I have been on active duty with the Army Air Forces, you have modernized the office, established a Little Theatre, expanded the library facilities, and installed additional machinery in the shops-to mention only a few improvements in physical equipment. An examination of the program of studies reveals that revisions have been instituted to keep the curriculum in step with trends influenced by the war. From reports in the newspapers I am aware of your activities in support of community projects, such as the purchase of War Bonds and Stamps and over-subscribing to the Red Cross. I am happy in the realiza- tion that the students of the Bloomington High School are making a worthy contribution to the war effort. To the Seniors, I extend congratulations. As the day of graduation approaches your minds turn to the question: What can we do to serve? In spite of your enthusiasm I sincerely hope this war will be over before you have had a chance to make the supreme sacrifice. Young men and women, just like the 1944 graduates of B. H. S-., will be needed in the years ahead to help our communities adjust to peacetime living and to see that those graduates and former students who have given their lives shall not have died for a lost cause. I pray that you may know happiness, DONALD L. SIMON Lt. Colonel, AC tPrincipal on Leave? prosperity, and peace. - The type of American boy Gerry Kisters is, un- ,Et getty rfcisfefzs The Senior Class of 1944 pays tribute to a gallant member of the Class of '37, Lieutenant Gerry Kisters. Lieutenant Kisters is the first soldier in World War II to receive both the Distinguished Service Cross and the Congressional Medal of Honor. He also is the recipient of the Purple Heart. During action in the Tunisian campaign, Kisters annihilated an 88- caliber field piece that was directing murderous fire at Allied troops. He escaped unscathed and later participated in the Sicilian campaign. In Sicily, single-handed, he wiped out two German machine gun nests with grenades, killed three Nazis, captured four more and caused one to flee in terror. It was during this attack that he was injured. Seven German bullets entered his body-five of them inflicting serious wounds. Lieutenant Kisters, who has been called the Sergeant York of World War II, attended high school at Houghton Lake, Michigan, for three years and then came to Bloom- ington where he graduated with the Class of '37, changed by his citations, honors and notoriety, was sin- cerely portrayed in his simple statement concerning his own post-war plans: After this war, I'm coming back to Bloomington to take over the fur business so that my dad can retire. He deserves it. , Today we are fighting the largest and most expensive , War of all times-expensive not only in cost of material but also in the cost of human life. Up to the time of the publi- cation of this Gothic, fourteen alumni of Bloomington High have made the supreme sacrifice for the country they loved. With the principles of simplicity, quality, and informality the Staff began Working on the Gothic. The Staff wishes to thank the administration, those members of the faculty and of the student body who so generously co-operated in the production of this year's annual. Uqcfministfzation ana, ...cfaculty Friendly administrators whom the students feel free to consult in the solving of personal problems is a necessity for a large high school. Superintendent Binford, acting principal, and Mr. Templeton, assistant principal, have maintained a fine spirit between faculty and students during the absence of Dr. Simon. Mr. Templeton also serves as dean of boys and Mrs. Krueger is the dean of girls. Educational and vocational guidance is under the direction of Miss Dodds and Mrs. Peters. This year the faculty encouraged many worthwhile projects in addition to their regular class work. They included war bond and stamp sales, Red Cross War Fund drive, salvage collections, knitting, and blood dona- tions. New members added to the faculty this year were Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Dowling, Mrs. Garton, Mrs. Neill, Mrs. Pournaras, Mr. Brice, Mr. Burns, Mr. Hoke, Mr. Long, and Mr. McCall. .Members of the faculty who have entered the armed forces since last year are Mr. Myers, Armyg Mr. Cox, Navy, Miss Schwend, WACQ Mr. Brogneaux, Navy, Mr. Wonnell, Army. A Q SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Seated: Phil Wible, Mr. Ashbaucher, Glen Graves, Miss Dodds, Martha Miller. Standing: Wilma Jean Cracraft, Phil Duncan, Don Trueblood. Cifass .gfistowy The history of the Class of 1944 of Bloomington High School started twelve years ago in cities throughout our nation where the present members of our class were in the first grade. After three years of high school training, however, we became united as a class. In April 1943, we elected the following class officers: Glen Graves, president, Phil Wible, vice-president, Don Trueblood, treasurer, Martha Miller, secretary, Phil Duncan, Gothic editor, and Wilma Jean Cracraft, business manager. As our sponsors we chose Miss Dodds and Mr. Ashbaucher. Our Prom, Wishing Well, was presented in honor of the class of 1,943 on May 14, 1943. Don Faris and Martha Miller reigned as prom king and queen. In our senior year we had our get-acquainted party on November f2 and the Farewell Flop, a party for January graduates, on January 20. The Gothic S-taff was announced on September 24 and Editor Phil Duncan and Business Manager Wilma Jean Cracraft met with their staff to map out the work on the yearbook. Our presentation of Western Union, Please on December S and 9 proved to be a howling success, and it was followed by our second play, Kind Lady, on April 19 and 20, which was excellently received. Graduating boys in the class who have entered the Armed Forces before the close of school are Lester Lucas, Paul Douthitt, Clifford Coan, Herbert Harrington, Gerald Sargent, Bob Weaver, Max Bender, Don Moulden, Herbert Capshew, Bob May, Jim McBride, Dick Ramsey, Billy Salmon, Bob Chaille, Bob Thompson, and Jimmie Humphrey. We held our reception for our parents on April 25 and with the prom, the senior dance, baccalaureate, and commencement, the Class of 1944 bade its farewell to B. H. S.
