Bloomington High School opened its doors to students and townspeople for special War Production Training Courses in arc welding, machine tool operation, and precision instrument reading. The Student Council, being the most representative club in the school, expressed through' its democratic princi- ples our ideas and ideals. The same enthusiasm, as in previous years, accompanied our athletic teams throughout their entire seasons. Com- pleting the picture were the people who participated in these events- the faculty and the students. -ls o T f O gf 'H y5L,L,7,wQ f5!L?R Kc .vw are df it f 4,t,'c-:l.?fNut 434324972 arm I 1 ' T Jr ? A , 'F , L I , 'Sim X z Q , WJ: 'if 5 3 This year B. H. S. High School life moved out of the old groove of constant hilarity and took on the appearance of a studious crowd of individuals at work. We were constantly aware of the loss of people whose faces we had been accustomed to seeing in our halls. The , first called from our faculty' into war service was cur own principal, Dr. Simon, who is now a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Corps. Soon after we were called upon to give Mr. Wonnell and Mr. Cuddy. Adding a note of sobriety to the many prized awards in our trophy case was our Service Honor Roll, a grim reminder of those boys from our own ranks who have made the supreme sacrifice. Our curriculum took on a new picture with the addition of war courses. We began to offer aeronautics, welding, .machine tool operation, photography, trigonometry, and the course that our sore bodies will never forget-physical fitness. A g c Following the wishes of the leaders of A our nation, we organized a Victory Corps. A A rousing patriotic convocation started off the Victory Corps membership drive. Yes, 1943 was a different type of year for B. H. S. students, but with surprising speed and accuracy, the new war roles were filled. V l LT. COL.' Pre-flight aeronautics and radio prepared boys for duty in the armed forces. Pan-American relations having become so important, Spanish was added to the foreign language curriculum. The Home Economics Department undertook two new projects this year. During the first semester two classes in nutrition were offered to parents of children whom the health department found undernourished. The second semester an exchange unit went into effect with the girls being taught how to make Victory Gardens, and the boys being tutored in nutrition. Annual physical examinations were re- quired, and one of the contributing factors of the physical fitness program was calisthenics. The Industrial Department offered class- es from four o'clock in the morning until midnight, in blueprint reading, machine tool operation, welding, drafting, and precision instrument reading. War geography and current events came to the fore in the social sciences, and new war developments were discussed in science classes. Keyed to new and better methods of learning, students of B. H. S. graduate into the definite positions for which they have been prepared. .nan-nn-n WWWWM f ig? RSM N, W . wx 4: U 1' ffm wr c 34,4 Q .ms A D. L qw Q lu--f 'l mf W wwf, 2 ,i z Our Part In The Victory Program Knitting and purling, buying stamps and bonds, collect- ing scrap, caring for war workers' children, and performing Victory Corps duties, we did our part, too. We knitted sweaters, helmets, wristlets, and afghans, which the local Rod Cross chapter distributed to service men. Attempting to achieve 1009? participation in the bond- selling drive, we saved our nickels and dimes and bought our small shares of America. No complete account of the sales was kept, but we did reach the five-hundred dollar mark for one Week. We pestered our neighbors for can lids in the hope that we might win a free airplane ride. We salvaged 695 pounds of metal from old engravings, brought in 140 pounds of old keys, and collected 1500 pairs of worn-out silk stockings which were given to the Monroe County Salvage Committee. Those of us who were members of the Silver Triangle and the Senior Girl Scouts helped to care for the children at the Bloomington Day Nursery. Working together on the home front, students and teachers of the Bloomington High School achieved a closer and more co-operative relationship. N L-', V WW 2 Q 3: SMX ,P iw xw I , 4 i .Q , . . The appreciation of music and the realization of all that it can mean to us became more apparent as we sang our patriotic songs with a greater feeling of devotion. The need for scientific knowledge caused many of us to enroll in chemistry, biology, physics, and general science. We, who have close friends and relatives stationed at the fighting fronts of the world, anxiously scanned the globe from day to day as We Watched the headlines for war developments. In the new radio studio in 203, we discovered what it meant to be On the Air as we gained valuable experience in radio Work. E 1' in ' ' Xe as ,K emo. The Blue Triangle opened its activities this year with an impressive candle light initiation service in the high school auditorium followed that evening by a Get Acquainted Potluck. In November the dignified seniors and the industrious juniors decked with short dresses, pigtails, big hairbows, and suckers turned out for the Kid Party. At Christmas time the girls volunteered to sacrifice their party to buy oranges for the Christmas baskets. The biggest event of the year was the Guest Night program. Service rings were awarded at this time to the girls who had done outstanding work in the Blue Triangle. Other important incidents of the year consisted of a Valentine Potluck, a Junior-Senior Send-off, and an Easter convocation. The Blue Triangle candy table in the front hall has become a favorite site for all students and teachers with a sweet tooth. A part of the profits from the candy sale goto the I. S. school life are classes and clubs which teach trades and develop talents. The students in shop classes are preparing themselves for the battle of production by taking extra class hours after and before school. Many even attend classes in machine tool operation and welding' during the early morning hours. Students enrolled in printing are responsible for printinff our school paper, diplomas, The Compass, and this year addegl the GOTHIC to their projects. The office-practice students learn the use of the ca'cu- lator, dictaphone, and mimeographing machine and become acquainted with office routines. Our Technical Staff provides every stage production with artistic scenery, skillful make-up, and effective lighting. The art classes add that certain touch by designing and painting many of the scenes. The art classes also put their knowledge to practical use by drawing posters for special occasions. Under the fast tempo of the war program, classes and clubs have contributed their part in sending graduates off the assembly line better equipped to meet the present crisis. ,. .. Both boys and girls enter into the athletic activities of B. H. S. The coaches, the cheer leaders, the managers, and the ushers . . . these are the people outside of the spotlight who share the essential responsibilities of our athletic events. It is the coaches who are responsible for the athletic, technical, and moral building of the boys under 'their care. The boys who take care of towels during time outs, who look for sweaters, and who do numerous other items of direct significance to the personal care of the team members are the managers. Rushing around in pastel sweaters, scurrying in and out of the crowds, carrying ticket stubs, the ushers helped our guests obtain their proper seats. The cheer- leaders are the people who help to get the crowd stirred up and ready for backing in crucial moments. These people plus an enthusiastic crowd are the factors which help our boys to complete a successful season. 5B-Men is Club Upon winning a major B in any sport, a boy is given the privilege of initiation and membership in the B-Men's Club. This means taking part in all activities and the privilege of wearing a B pin. The B-Men's Club was organized to bring about a closer, more co-operative spirit among the various athletic teams and coaches, and to create a connecting link in the life of the school between social activities and athletics. Class H118 tory The history of the class of 1943 is a well-known story to the 242 seniors. Unacquainted with the ways of the school, we started out as freshmen, 400 strong to do and dare. After three years of learning, we first expressed ourselves as a class in April of 1942 with the election of class officers, namely, Howard House, president, Robert Koontz, vice- presidentg Dudley Colbert, treasurer, and Marjorie Burns, secretary. We chose as class sponsors Mr. Hurst, Mrs. Peters, and Mr. Stubbs. In traditional manner as our first social event, we presented the Maytime Promenade in honor of the class of 1942 with Joe Kennedy and Kathryn Ramsey reigning as prom king and queen. The beginning of the year found us choosing new sponsors because of the loss of Mr. Hurst to the armed forces, and the resignation of Mr. Stubbs. Our new sponsors were Mr. Wonnell and Miss Gilstrap. Mr. Wonnell left us on February 15, making two class sponsors we had given to the service. Mrs. Atkins was appointed faculty business manager of the Senior class to replace Mr. Wonncll. On September 25 the Gothic staff was announced, and Work on the year book was enthusiastically started. The class held its first party of the year as a get-acquainted dance. Spring Fever, our first dramatic performance of the year, scored a big triumph with its many rollicking laughs. January 22 found us entering the gym attired as farmers and farmerettes for the Jersey Bounce. On March 11th a reception was held for our parents, and soon after, our second play of the year, Every Family Has One, was pre- sented. With the prom, the senior dance, baccalaureate, and commence- ment, the class of 1943 bade its farewell to B. H. S.
