This year the Gothic has adopted the style and pattern of several popular magazines, well known to students. The division pages feature the cover designs of these magazines: the index being modeled after the Readers Digest: the Facul- ty section, after Time: Classes, after Life: Athletics, after Newsweek: and clubs, after Vogue. p Like the magazines, the Gothic has focused attention on activities. The camera man has caught athletes in action, clubs in session, seniors and faculty in familiar haunts, and scenes from leading plays and convocations. Accompanying each organization picture is a short, informal account of the activities of each group during the current school year. That the accomplishments of B. H. S. or- ganizations have been significant and many is clearly revealed in these write-ups. Mem- bers of these organizations are to be con- gratulated. All students and teachers, with a few exceptions, have their pictures in this book. Besides the portraits, there are included many snapshots of students in natural poses. The Gothic is a product of the entire school. Without splendid cooperation from administrators, teachers, and pupils the pub- lication of this book would not have been possible. To the 850 subscribers and to the 100 busi- ness men who contributed to the financial success of the Gothic the staff extends its sincerest thanks. The staff hopes that you will read the Gothic as You would your favorite magazine and that you will turn to it again and again in the future as a book truly representative of life in Bloomington High School during 1941-1942. 77m othic Digest ARTICLES OF LASTING INTEREST Captains of Education .a...Aa,,A End of the Trail ...,,......,., One Year to Go ....,... With the coming of spring of 1941 came the day when these students chose the following leaders for the next year: Robert Hedrick, president: Kitty Lee Brown, vice-president: Mary Esther Graves, secretary: and Dick I-lennon, treasurer. Miss Elizabeth Dodds and Mr. Harvey Poling were elected class sponsors. Soon after the election, necessary committees were appointed for the Prom Parade, or the annual Iunior-Senior Prom. With due pomp and cere- mony, Barbara Nelle Iohnson and Bill Gifford ascended the throne to reign as king and queen of the prom. In the fall of l94l, Mr. Grady Stubbs was appointed class sponsor, as Mr. Poling had assumed the duties of county superintendent of schools. As one of its projects, the class voted to assume joint responsibility with the Camera Club in sponsoring a movie pageant of Monroe County community life. Choosing Spring Dance for their first dramatic production of the year and What A Life, starring Henry Aldrich, as their last and final play, the seniors gave both matinee and evening performances before enthusiastic audiences. , , One of the highlights of the last lap on the four-year stretch was the first Gothic dance held in November with Barbara Nelle Iohnson reigning as Gothic Queen. Margaret Selzer and Esther Binkley were her attendants. The Little Abner Class Party, the skating party in April, and the tradi- tional Senior-Parent reception also left never-to-be-forgotten memories. The month of May with Commencement exercises, Baccalaureate services, and Class Day exercises rang down the curtain on four happy and eventful years for this class of two hundred seventy-one seniors. ir 'Ir 'lr wwf IUNIORS 5 XC' ws- A K qw , , A V K ,KH K T K KK A K K x,. Spiced with clever dialogue, Spring Dance takes place on the campus of a girls' college, scene of trivolity, fun, and romance. What A Lite has an amusing plot, in which Henry Aldrich, a mischievous high school boy, involves himself in worse and worse predicaments. At a Christmas convocation, the play A Sign Unto You held the entire audience in reverent silence as the little visitor to a rich man's household on Christ- mas Eve revealed Himself as the Christ Child. mg - iii KSN? fffl . 4 ,,,, ,,,,, 3 , Spring Dance A Siqn Unto You What A Life Senior Sala Senior Io's Fun Couple in the Castle Everyone louis one while Rug-cutter Drake Melodrama Muster Hoe-down elnu Fllffi-llllEN FRESHMEN X :V gg, V 51 43. The local boys, under superior coaching, performed like veterans. A week later, Central of Evansville, one of the strongest in the state, handed the Pan- thers their first defeat of the season. A much heavier team, the Bears defeated the Panthers 38-O. The following Friday night the Panthers journeyed to Sullivan. There they met the South's strongest team. The Purple and White managed to stay on even terms with the Arrows for a greater part of the first half. The Arrows then took to the air, and with a brilliant passing attack defeated the Panthers 43-7. Traveling to Washington, the Panthers, determined to make a come-back, steamrolled the Hatchets by a score of l2-O. On October 10, the Panthers returned to their own field to meet Linton Miners. The Panthers outplayed the Miners and defeated them 12-6. Doyle lean Chitwood Deal With victory in their hearts and football on their minds, the Panthers had little difficulty in white-washing the Columbus Bulldogs bv a score of 12-U. On October 22, New Castle invaded the Panthers' hunting ground, prepared forakill. But the mighty Panthers conquered the enemy 6-2. The Purple and White gridders then journeyed to Garfield where they played one of the best games of the season. Garfield was leading until the last quarter. The Panthers sharpened their claws and rallied to score two touchdowns and win 19-18. Closing their season, they played Booneville on Mumby Field. The Pioneers managed to edge out the Panthers l4-O. Booneville remained undefeated all season. At the end of the season Bloomington had a record of six wins and three losses. Each candidate for membership must have participated in five one-act plays. Student Thespians coach one-act plays and work with make-up, thus receiving practical training. Activities for the club this year have included a rummage sale, a banquet- initiation, and a one-act play. The play, Not Quite Such a Goose, was given at a pay convocation on March 19. The cast included Kay Smith, Howard House, Martha Miller, Boyd Sturdevant, and Wilma Rae Hanna. Impromptu plays have been featured at the meetings. The officers are: Peggy Gross, president: Dick Mundy, vice-presidentp Florence Routen, secretary-treasurer: Mrs. Childs, sponsor. Twelve students this year made Quill and Scroll, international honorary or- ganization for high school journalists. The qualifications for Quill and Scroll membership are high: outstanding achievements in journalism, scholastic ranking in the upper third of the class, junior or senior class standing, and recommendation by the sponsor. The club has had jolly parties, held on occasions such as initiations. Known as the Charles A. Wells Chap- ter, the local society benefits from its affiliation with the national organiza- tion by receiving the Quill and Scholl magazine, by national newspaper con- tests, and by individual writing contests. Thus the Student Council started a campaign to place B. H. S. actively in the ranks of those pledged to defeat the Axis. Other war activities followed. With the proceeds from one of the sport dances held by the Student Council, a Defense Bond was purchased for the Council of 1952. Urging all organizations to contribute, the Student Council also supervised the collection of Waste paper. The Defense Stamp, an all-school dance was sponsored by the Student Council on March 27, with Don Phillips' band, Well-known in Southern Indiana, playing. The Council also held sports dances following football and basketball games. With other organizations, the Council has had charge of tea dances given after school on Friday afternoons. In front, another girl in white spoke earnestly to a crowded audience of students on the subject of patriotism. Following this came more talks, the recital of poems, a beautiful solo, and several patriotic selections by the entire girl chorus. This was the convocation held by the Blue Triangle in February. The Blue Triangle's biggest social event was a Mother-Daughter banquet, given in March, at which fifteen girls were awarded service rings. The following received rings: Esther Binkley, Margaret Curts, Peggy Gross, Dorothy Burns, Dorothea Adams, Maxine Srnedley, Betty Cline, Mary Esther Graves, Lois Anderson, Barbara Nelle johnson, Bonnie Dalton, Peggy Peters, and Imogene Young, seniors, and Mary Lee Adams and Marjorie Burns, juniors. The girls have some never-to-be-forgotten parties. They held a Get-Acguainted Potluck and a Halloween party last fall. CAt Christmas time, however, they decided to forego their annual Yule party and bought oranges to put into Christmas baskets for the poor, instead? In February there was a chili supper, at which they auctioned off white elephants. The Blue Triangle table in the front hall attracts swarms of students and teachers at 3:00 and 4:00 o'clock every afternoon. Part of the proceeds from these sales estab- lishes a scholarship to Indiana University for one semester to be awarded a Blue Tri girl at Commencement. The biggest project which the library sponsored this year was the celebration of Book Vtfeek, November Z-9. The theme was Forward with Books. Cn April 9, Mrs. leanette Covert Nolan, dis- tinguished local author, spoke for the Senior High convocation. Approximately seven hundred new books have been added to the library this year. The librarian is Miss Hauser.
