DEDICATION The 1933 “Gothic'1 could not be dedicated to one more worthy of such a distinction than a man who served his school and won for him- self the admiration and love of The Senior Class, as well as that of the entire Student Body. SCUCCI 1933 CLASS OFFICERS I.-eft to Right—William Stout. President; Ruth Thompson. Secretary; Robert Bad- ertscher. Vice President; Sarah Snyder. Treasurer. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1933 On April 25, 1932. the class of 1933 cast ballots, electing: William Stout, president: Robert Badertscher. vice president; Ruth Thompson, secretary; and Sarah Snyder, treasurer. The class later selected as its sponsors: Stella Rouse and William Ferguson. An early class meeting set the date of the annual Junior-Senior party for May 17. This festivity differed from the customary banquet of pre- vious years, and took the form of a picnic which was held at the Brown County State Park. Shortly after the fall session of school opened, a class meeting was held to decide whether or not the class desired, for financial reasons, to publish an annual. An overwhelming assenting majority resulted in the subsequent election of James Cathcart, “GOTHIC” editor, and Donald Woolery, “GOTHIC” business manager. During the first semester, a successful play, “Take My Advice”, was presented by a praiseworthy cast. During the fall term, however, the most meritorious activity of the Senior Class was the lead taken by the Class in the Christmas Charity Drive. Charles McDaniels, Ellen Murphy. Wilma Jean Schmalz. and William Stout, with George Blair, a junior, who served as chairman of the committee, are to be praised for their coopera- tive endeavors to bring Christmas cheer to the needy of the city. The ac- tivities of the semester were climaxed by a novel Senior mixer” taking the form of a prosperity carnival. During the second semester, another play, The Patsy”, was given. Both the play and its cast won much commendation for excellency. This, we. the class of 1933. respectfully submit as a summary of our activities during our Senior year. Leaving the school wherein we have spent our past four years, we sincerely hope that we have contributed to the spirit of the school, something which will remain long after we leave. For us, those years will remain silhouetted forever in our memories. (17) GOTHIC Badertscher, Robert A cademic t int lib Stuff Quill and Scroll • Toko My Advice” TheM i n V Pre . MUMBY A. L. PHILLIPS MAJOR SPORTS 1932-33 Bloomington High School is very fortunate in having such men as A. L. Phillips and H. F. Mumby as coaches of the major sports. In the past years Bloomington has gained wide recognition for the high stand- ards it has established in athletics. This year. Mr. Phillips, with the as- sistance of B. F. Miller, successfully molded practically new recruits into a basketball team dangerous to all its opponents. Bloomington opened its season September 2. and barely nosed out a surprisingly strong Spen- cer team. On December 9 the Panthers were obliged to take a trimming from their traditional rivals, the Stonecutters of Bedford. However, this defeat was avenged on January 27. of the new year, when B. 11. S. invaded the Bedford gym and came away with a well-earned victory. Although the Panthers encountered many strong teams during the season, they man- aged to come out on top by winning games from Columbus, Bloomfield, Greencastle. Salem, Mitchell, Bedford, and Vincennes; by tying a thrilling game with Sullivan; and by losing only to Martinsville. Shortridge, Shel- byville, and Columbus. In football. Mr. Mumby, with the assistance of W. N. Baker, was able to produce a team that was beaten only once. The football season was successfully opened September 17 when Worthington came to B. H. S. and was badly beaten. On the following Friday, September 23, the Pan- thers traveled to Bloomfield and were again triumphant. The rest of the games were similar to these with the exception of the game with Techni- cal of Indianapolis, which ended in a scoreless tie. The season ended with a game on Armistice Day, in which Elwood was able to gain a 0-0 victory. The wonderful record of Coach Mumby’s team greatly overshadowed this one defeat. gothic PHILLIP AREND Senior Guard DENTON COOK Junior Hulf-Back ROBERT BECKER Senior End WOODROW COVINGTON Senior Full-Back LELAND BELL Senior Full-Back SAMUEL GRAi Senior End HAROLD CLAGER (Captain) Senior Half-Back GEORGE DITTRICH Junior Tackle (71) (75) ATHLETICS Charles McDaniels Senior Tackle WILLIAM HACKER Senior Guard JOSEPH THRASHER Senior Quarter-Back ALBERT HAZEL Junior Center THOMAS VOLIVA Senior Guard MERLE HILL Senior End MERRILL WYKOFF Senior Center JOHN HENRY Senior Guard GOTI Fir t How—Word Baker (Coach). Mumby, Bloomington High School has won practically all of her wrestling meets. This year, with plenty of veteran material left from 1932, the Mumby men were able to capture first place in the annual Indiana State High School Wrestling Meet. This was the fifth time the Panthers had won the title. Individual first places were won by Charles McDaniels, heavyweight class; William Covington, 115 pound class; and Thomas Bryce, 135 pound class. Ch3ncey McDaniels, 155 pound class, was awarded second place. Third places were won by Harry Voliva, 125 pound class, and James Bender, 100 pound class. The regular schedule of the Panthers included matches with Muncie, 1932 State Champs, and Wiley of Terre Haute. Bloomington was victori- ous in all of these matches, the scores being a distinct proof of the Mum- bymen’s strength. Bloomington High School students have always been proud of their athletic teams, especially the ones winning High Honors. Therefore, B. H. S. takes this opportunity of congratulating her wrestling squad! (80) AM I ETI('$ Fint Row—Rolirrt Matthew , ('larenrr Carroll. Frwl llayto. Phillip- (t'oaeh) TRACK—1932 Although the 1932 Bloomington High School Track team was com- posed of inexperienced material, the Phillipsmen were able to capture sec- ond place in two of southern Indiana’s major track conferences. Led mainly by sophomores and juniors, the high school tracksters finished close behind the Vincennes Alices in the South Central Confer- ence held here on April 23. In the Hoosier Southern Conference the Pan- thers trailed the Brazil Red Devils. 47 to 33' ... Shelbyville was third with a total of 24 4 points. The rest of the schedule consisted of the Wiley. Technical of Indian- apolis, Bloomington triangular meet in which Wiley won; the Salem meet held at Salem which the Panthers lost 71-44; and the Bedford meet in which Bloomington was beaten 77-35. The mainstays of the Panther squad were Charles McDanie's, weight man, and the half-mile relay team composed of Paul Underwood, Harold Clager, Robert Martin, and George Williams. The relay team lost only once and McDaniels was continually a winner. Mason Warner was the outstanding dash man; Tommy Deckard was outstanding in distances; and John Wilson proved best in high jump. -(81) GCTHIC A ANAGfR5 (82) 8oo THIS SPORTING AGE m r£cTa wv.' rnt'atAi. n’coy VICTORY ro He DUTCH jcr c.rrr-r r-r GOTHIC AN AOOCECIATICN We wish to take this opportunity of expressing our thanks to those not on the staff who have contribut- ed to the success of this book: to the several subscription salesmen, and to those who took part in the Senior plays.
