1131117111011 12 ln 1863 Prof D Eckley Hunter became the frrst superrntendent of the graded school and hrgh school system whrch he had succeeded rn pursuadrng the people to adopt He contrnued rn offrce untrl 1867 vshen E P Pole as sumed the responsrbrlrtres of the superrntendency for the next three years Prof Pole was succeeded by George Washrngton Lee rn 1870 Prof Lee was a graduate of lndrana Asbury Un1vers1ty at Greencastle and recerved hrs master s degree at l U rn 1859 J M NX rlson vsas superrntendent from 1872 to 1873 From 1875 to 1877 Mrss Margaret Mcfalla was superrntendent She served agarn from 1880 to 1890 and because of her farthful servrce Nleflalla School vsas named rn her honor Upon her resrgnatron rn 1890 Mr C M Carpenter was elected superrn tendent and he served untrl 1897 when W H Pertrch took the posrtron NVm H Glascock followed Fertrch and under hrs admrnrstratron actrvrtres such as athletrcs oratory and musrc flourrshed rn the school Upon hrs death rn 1901 Mr James K Beck the Hrgh School Prrncrpal was elected to the place whrch he oceupred untrl 1906 at whrch trme he resrgned to enter busrness lt vsas durrng hrs admrnrstratron that the school year vsas drvrded rnto tvso semesters and the plan of half year promotrons by subjects was rnaugurated Mr W H Sanders was chosen head of the school ystem rn 1907 and served untrl 1909 Mr Sanders made the frrst arrangements wrth the Um versrty by whrch the Hrgh School was to be used for observatron and practree teachrng courses of the Unrversrty the school crty to recerve 833 for permrttrng the use of the Hrgh School one half of whrch was to be pard to the superrn tendent the other half to the school board The Unrversrty now pays about 40 per cent of the salary of crrtrc teachers the school crty payrng the other 60 per cent Vlr Sanders resrgned rn 1909 and for the thrrd trme a local person was elected Mr Henry L Smrth the present Dean of the School of Educatron rn lndrana Unrversrty In hrs superrntendency the Hrgh School was transferred to the new burldrng whrch had been burlt rn 1914 'Xflr E E Ramsey who had been Prrncrpal of the Hrgh School was elected Supermtendent rn 1917 Athletrcs partrcularly basketball prospered under the able drrectron of C E Montgomery the frrst coach to devote hrmself almost entrrely to athletrcs Vlr Ralph N Trrey the present Supermtendent has held that posrtron srnce 1922 A new grade burldrng a large gxmnasrum and a burldrng novt under constructron for the stone department are the result of the burldrng pro gram rnstrtuted rn hrs term Facrlrtres hate been provrded for many vocatronal subrects rn thrs perrod also Ilfyll 1 , I 1 1 I 3 3 1 1 1 7 I Y - 1 'l l 1 . 1 I 3 X J 7 , ' ' 1 1 1 1 1 . - V y - ' , . e ,' , '. 1 ' k V L .
