DKKI In September of l863 the Hugh School proper yy hlch was a part of the graded system devased and Introduced by Prof D Eckley Hunter was put lnto operataon The trustee announced that the school yy as free to all pupxls wlthln the corporatlon and was to be held ln the neyy bulldtng rl has neyx bulldmg was the old tannery remodeled standmg on the sate of the present Central School Bualdmg After a few years the Hlgh School was moyed to a new structure on the corner of Washlngton and Slxth Streets Pll1lS yy as rather larger than most schools m use at that tlme and vyas eonstructed almost enttrely of brlck lt contamed the usual hall yyuth a eloale room on exther slde the hall open1ng tnto a large room occupymg most of the lower floor The second story yy as dlylded into seyeral smaller rooms yy hleh yy ere to be used for study and recttatlon Slhls bu1ld1ng has the dlstmctton of bemg the ftrst m Bloomtngton to be erected for the sole purpose of a htgh school It yy as later torn down to make room for the present Carnegle l lbrary In l8fa Ille present Central School yy as eompleteel at a cost of about Sl? U00 and the High School vyas then moyed xnto Ilae thlrd story of at The bulldlng yy as completely modern and seryed to house the Hrgh School lor almost tyyenty ftve years although at the present only the loyyer Grades are mg and many people thought lf an extray agant yy aste of money yet the Htgh School rapldly lnlled up the thud floor and soon became cramped an ats neyy quarters Durmg the superlntendency of Vlr XX H Fertlch seyeral maportant changes yyere brought about 1n the affaxrs of the schools among yy hlch yy as the moytnq of the Htgh School from Central to the old bulldlng formerly occupled by he Untyersxty Thts bulldmg yy as purchased by the cnty from the Unlyersley tn l899 for the sum of 'fall 500 The Unlverstty had butlt lt ln l8an but abandoned ll ln l883 due to the loss ol mother buxldlng hy ltghtnlng It was an thls school that the f1rst annual was publlshed and the Gothlc style of archytecture of the butldlng has been commemorated ln th name of the annual The H1 h School contmued to grow rapidly and the old college bualdmg became so crowded that a new bu1ld1ng vyas decxded upon lt yyas fmtshed and dedrcated on December 4 l9l4 lts cost yy as approx1mately Sl49 OOO and lf could accommodate sux hundred students makmg If one of the fmest and largest h1gh school buxldmgs tn the state lt was mtended to care for the H1gh School for a long tame but by l921 an addltton had to be made and by this addltlon the capactty of the sehool vyas more than doubled Noyy an 1028 the number of puptls enrolled ts almost equal to the capaclty of the buxldtng and as groyy mg eyery year 111 N1 .
