U00 and the High School vyas then moyed xnto Ilae thlrd story of at The bulldlng yy as completely modern and seryed to house the Hrgh School lor almost tyyenty ftve years although at the present only the loyyer Grades are mg and many people thought lf an extray agant yy aste of money yet the Htgh School rapldly lnlled up the thud floor and soon became cramped an ats neyy quarters Durmg the superlntendency of Vlr XX H Fertlch seyeral maportant changes yyere brought about 1n the affaxrs of the schools among yy hlch yy as the moytnq of the Htgh School from Central to the old bulldlng formerly occupled by he Untyersxty Thts bulldmg yy as purchased by the cnty from the Unlyersley tn l899 for the sum of 'fall 500 The Unlverstty had butlt lt ln l8an but abandoned ll ln l883 due to the loss ol mother buxldlng hy ltghtnlng It was an thls school that the f1rst annual was publlshed and the Gothlc style of archytecture of the butldlng has been commemorated ln th name of the annual The H1 h School contmued to grow rapidly and the old college bualdmg became so crowded that a new bu1ld1ng vyas decxded upon lt yyas fmtshed and dedrcated on December 4 l9l4 lts cost yy as approx1mately Sl49 OOO and lf could accommodate sux hundred students makmg If one of the fmest and largest h1gh school buxldmgs tn the state lt was mtended to care for the H1gh School for a long tame but by l921 an addltton had to be made and by this addltlon the capactty of the sehool vyas more than doubled Noyy an 1028 the number of puptls enrolled ts almost equal to the capaclty of the buxldtng and as groyy mg eyery year 111 N1 . ' 4 4, y ' ik Q TJ' . ,- 1,1 S5 ' '9 rn M: Pngf lfighf I'11g1v Xinr' 1131117111011 12 ln 1863 Prof D Eckley Hunter became the frrst superrntendent of the graded school and hrgh school system whrch he had succeeded rn pursuadrng the people to adopt He contrnued rn offrce untrl 1867 vshen E P Pole as sumed the responsrbrlrtres of the superrntendency for the next three years Prof Pole was succeeded by George Washrngton Lee rn 1870 Prof Lee was a graduate of lndrana Asbury Un1vers1ty at Greencastle and recerved hrs master s degree at l U rn 1859 J M NX rlson vsas superrntendent from 1872 to 1873 From 1875 to 1877 Mrss Margaret Mcfalla was superrntendent She served agarn from 1880 to 1890 and because of her farthful servrce Nleflalla School vsas named rn her honor Upon her resrgnatron rn 1890 Mr C M Carpenter was elected superrn tendent and he served untrl 1897 when W H Pertrch took the posrtron NVm H Glascock followed Fertrch and under hrs admrnrstratron actrvrtres such as athletrcs oratory and musrc flourrshed rn the school Upon hrs death rn 1901 Mr James K Beck the Hrgh School Prrncrpal was elected to the place whrch he oceupred untrl 1906 at whrch trme he resrgned to enter busrness lt vsas durrng hrs admrnrstratron that the school year vsas drvrded rnto tvso semesters and the plan of half year promotrons by subjects was rnaugurated Mr W H Sanders was chosen head of the school ystem rn 1907 and served untrl 1909 Mr Sanders made the frrst arrangements wrth the Um versrty by whrch the Hrgh School was to be used for observatron and practree teachrng courses of the Unrversrty the school crty to recerve 833 for permrttrng the use of the Hrgh School one half of whrch was to be pard to the superrn tendent the other half to the school board The Unrversrty now pays about 40 per cent of the salary of crrtrc teachers the school crty payrng the other 60 per cent Vlr Sanders resrgned rn 1909 and for the thrrd trme a local person was elected Mr Henry L Smrth the present Dean of the School of Educatron rn lndrana Unrversrty In hrs superrntendency the Hrgh School was transferred to the new burldrng whrch had been burlt rn 1914 'Xflr E E Ramsey who had been Prrncrpal of the Hrgh School was elected Supermtendent rn 1917 Athletrcs partrcularly basketball prospered under the able drrectron of C E Montgomery the frrst coach to devote hrmself almost entrrely to athletrcs Vlr Ralph N Trrey the present Supermtendent has held that posrtron srnce 1922 A new grade burldrng a large gxmnasrum and a burldrng novt under constructron for the stone department are the result of the burldrng pro gram rnstrtuted rn hrs term Facrlrtres hate been provrded for many vocatronal subrects rn thrs perrod also Ilfyll 1 , I 1 1 I 3 3 1 1 1 7 I Y - 1 'l l 1 . 1 I 3 X J 7 , ' ' 1 1 1 1 1 . - V y - ' , . e ,' , '. 1 ' k V L . GIRLS ATHLETICS The Girls Athletic Association of Bloomington High School was organ 17ed in November of l026 The purpose of this organization is to promote activities which will develop a sound mind and a sound body The motto is Health Happiness and Efficiency There are the usual four officers and a chairman of each sport Various sports are taken up during each season They are soccer in the fall basketball and dancing in the winter track and baseball in the spring Points may also be made through gym classes and outside activities VJhen a girl has earned four hundred points she is given numerals one thousand pomts merits a B and if a girl acquires pomts in every sport she earns a circle B which is the highest honor awarded The outstanding activity of the Girls Athletic Association last year was a vaudeville which showed the progress of the girls in various activities A piano vsas purchased with a part of the proceeds lu Irrfhllfrnflf Y L Points are given in a sport to each girl who wins a place on the team. ' h ' uv Ilunalrrrl an I S1 rru THE GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATICN Nor love nor honour wealth nor pow r Can give the heart a cheerful hour When health is lost Be timely wise With health all taste of pleasure flies In the fall of 1926 Miss Carr director of girls physical education in Bloomington High School organized a Girls Athletic Association The club has set Health Efficiency and Happiness as ltS standards After a girl has earned one hundred points in athletic achievement she may be initlated into the association If she succeeds in making four hundred points she may receive her class numerals Every girl strives to earn one thousand points which entitled her to a B monogram and the director of physical education make up the athletic board The officers this year are Mary M Campbell President Mary Siebenthal Vice President Irene Bowman Secretary Jean Gray Treasurer Miss Carr is sponsor 1 :Il 1 9 I A group consisting of the officers of the G. A., heads of each sport, 1,lljI' Hur H11 II 111411111 Ei! lil Page One HlllllIl'l'lI and Nine e Vlll K Debating and public speaking have long been outstanding activities of the school Formerly each member of the graduating class was required to deliver an oration as a part of the commencement exercises During the year 1887 86 a contest in public speaking xt as held with the Preparatory Department of the University The South Central Association organi ed before 1900 held con tests in public speaking in which Bloomington High School participated lht first formal organilation for debating mentioned in school publica tions or local newspapers vs as the Bloomingtor High School Debating Club xx hich was organized in 1907 and lasted a vear or two T he Dialectic Society founded in 1913 the Speakers Club founded in 1918 and the Philo matheon Club founded in 1922 were all short lived organ17at1ons for the furthering of debating and public speaking in the High School 'l here is at the participation in contests Since the year of 1923 24 Bloomington has been creditably represented in the State High School Discussion league and the National Oratorical Contest sponsored by the newspapers of the United States The first High School paper the Specula was published in 1908 At first it was a bi weekly publication later it was increased in size and published monthly The Gothic News was published first in 1912 lt was very popular with the students but shared the chief fault of its predecessor the inability to support itself During the year of 1913 14 the name was changed to the Optimist When the paper was on the verge of failure due to an insufficient number of subscribers the difficulties were solved by securing enough advertising to pay for publication and by distributing the paper free to all students The Optim 1St is edited by students under faculty supervision and serves as the official organ of the school ln 1923 the Press Club vsas organ17ed to further the interest in journal ism among the students and to provide training for future Optimist and Gothic staffs The work of the club was in reporting editorial writing and feature writing lt was created with the idea of having staffs of the schools literary productions selected from it but has not been continued There have been glee clubs in Bloomington High School since 1912 when Miss Ida Peterson formed a girls glee club 1-ler untiring efforts in working with the glee clubs of the next few years have made their influence felt in the student life of the school During the school year of 1913 14 the German Chorus was organized to enable the students to get a more intimate view of German life by singing German songs and carrying on conxersations wholly in German Since participation in the chorus added three per cent to one s German grade it proved xery populir and continued until anti German sentiment caused the removal of German from the curriculum when the United States entered the World War Iirfl Ilzllflulfr . -f -1 -1- -1 -Clair we , , ,, ., 1 1 S,-1 x L .
