ik Comm-ll 4 BIBGDSL 4 -1I+0000Ol O O Y O O O O In the great European war just closed, the Alumni of B. H. S. manifested the same zeal and ardor which had fired their forefathers to deeds of patriotism. Bravely, gladly they volunteered to do their duty when their country called. About tour hundred from Bloomington High School served in the army of the United States. Ten gave their lives in service. Those who made the great sacrifice were Joseph Barclay, Bruce Chambers, Horace Hay, John Heitger, Wilburn Hunter, Hoyt lllassy, Laurens Strain, Wallaffe Sumner, Richard Wag- ner, Hattie VVylie and Burton VVoolery. VVell may Bloomington High School be proud of these heroes who fell. Yet many of the boys never reached the other side. Not less are they to be praised for had they been given the same opportunities as the others they would have manifested like bravery. The boys then in school, not to be outclassed in patriotism, took up mili- tary training. It was not always pleasant to drill in cold and rain, to be or- dered about by other boys, but they did not falter, hoping to prepare them- selves if the time should come when they too, would be needed. The training was tirst begun under the direction of Lieut. Jerry Green. He was stricken with intluenza and died. Ile was liked and respected by all the boys. The next term the training was carried on by Lieut. Paul Feltus. Bloomington High School has also taught her pupils loyalty, devotion, and the spirit of fellowship. The loyalty and the hacking of the school has al- ways been of the best. Whatever project has been undertaken by the school the pupils have shown their willingness to give their time, money and support to it. Especially has this been true in basketball. The first basketball team was organized in 1912. With eagerness and en- thusiasm they went into the fight and emerged winners of the sectional tourna- ment. Every year thereafter they played with the same result, hoping always to attain a higher plane, that of state championship. Last year the team, coached by Clifford Vilells, went to Lafayette with the determination to Win the state title. The high school pupils had the same determination. And win they did. Glory and honor had been won and the spirit of Bloomington High remained. O O Q O 0 p O rOOoo--,H --OOOOQA
