Some way had to he provided to give the women an education equal to that of the men. Consequently in 1835 a llfomenls Seminary was founded to which tuition was charged. The first principal was Cornelius Pering, an Englishman, educated in London. This seminary was held in the old Ousler property just north of the post office. There was a ten months' course offering reading, spelling, writ- ing, arithmetic, geography, history, public speaking, chemistry, astronomy, geometry, lilreneh, musie and painting. It took the place of hoth high school and nniveisity. The organization of the high school in 1863 caused the semi- nary to close its doors. A ln this year Prof. Hunter introduced the graded system consisting of four grades, the primary, intermediate, grammar sehool and high school. The first high school was held on the third floor of what is now called the Central School. There were but two teaehers. The school was supported hy suhscription. Prof. Hunter was the first high school principal. Other principals and superinten- dents of the early high sehcol were E. P. Cole, James Wilson, WV. R. Houghton and Miss Margaret Mcfjalla. ln the first year of the high sehool there were sixty pupils enrolled. ln 1881 Bloomington High School had an enrollment of seventy-one males he- tween the ages of ten and twenty-one and eighteen over twenty-one years of age. There were eighty-one females hetween the ages of ten and twenty-one and two over twenty-one years of age. ln 1853 the Methodists of Bloomington founded the Bloomington Fe- male flollege, using their ehureh for that purpose. Late in the seventies another one was built. This was struck by lightning in l883 and burned to the ground. The tract of land facing Fifth Street, the present college campus, was then purchased and the college moved there. The university placed a preparatory school in the old college building on Second Street. Much the same course of study was offered in prep, or the Model School, as it was called, as in High school.
