The Bloomington High School Purple Raiders opened their i952-l953 grid season with Feitshans of Spring- field. The Raiders were able to hold Feitshans score- less for the first 20 minutes of the contest, but at the close of the first half a Raider pass from Ken Ander- son to Mike Karon was intercepted, and a few seconds later John Hicks plunged over the goal for the first score of the game. Feitshans went on to win, 2l-O. The next encounter was with the Decatur Reds on the opponent's gridiron. Bloomington was plagued all evening by a big, hard charging Decatur line. It was the first Big Twelve conference game and a tough one to lose. Despite some superior play by the Raiders, they were beaten l3-6 by a team which out-weighed them by some 20 pounds to the man. The Raiders also suffered when Mike Karon turned up with a twisted ankle and saw very little action. The next game saw the Purplemen battle to a O-O tie with the U. High Pioneers. The Raiders couldn't get up enough steam to score themselves although they pushed deep into Pioneer territory on several occasions during the game. Trinity High School Saints made their appearance on the local scene in the next fracas. It was a rough battle for both teams but the Saints, sporting their best eleven in several years, came out on top of a l4-6 count and the Raiders walked off the field with another defeat. The Lincoln Railsplitters set out to spoil the home- comer's spirit the following weekend. Both the team and the fans were keyed high as the Purple and Gold took the field for battle. lt was the same story in this Let go! Raiders moving in. Go, Jack! Hit him low, Jerry!
