The honeymoon'’ ended abruptly when St. Charles gave the boys a 25-0 trouncing. As champions will do however, the team bounced back and played its best game of the season against New Richland winning 6-0 on Harold Underwood's 75 yard run in the second quarter. Emmons was next and after trail- ing‘6-0 and 12-7 at t wo stages during the first half the Black and White rallied to score 34 points in the second half to win 47-12. Hayfield was the next to fall in a hard-fought game before a huge crowd. Janes- ville was the homecoming opponent and the Blossoms pleased the grads with a stunning 42-0 conquest over this bitter rival. This win more than atoned for the 34-7 licking administered by the Polar Bears the previous year. Freeborn as usual presented a tricky offense but lost 26-6. The big one with Ellendale for the championship was next and the locals tucked away the trophy with a 21-13 victory. At the end of the season “Moose' Johnson, offensive end and defensive tackle, was chosen “most valu- able ' by his teammates and Jerry Srsen and Harold Underwood turned over the co-captaincy to John Hard- ing and Harvey Pic tts for 1953. Four boys were chosen on the all-conference team. Roger Johnson, end; Clair Coughlin, tackle; Jerry Srsen, quarterback; Jim Srsen, fullback. The following received letters and gold footballs at the awards assembly at the close of the season. Seniors - Jerry Srsen, Harold Underwood, Roger Johnson, Ferris Decker, BUI McDonald, Bob Ille, Don Shelgren, Ken Winzenburg, Clair Coughlin, Jim Srsen and Ray Dray. BASKETBALL RE-VIEW AND PRE-VIEW Highlights of the Blooming Prairie High School basketball season were the new scoring record set by big ’’Moose” Johnson who scored 431 points for an average of 26.6 points per game, and the leadership of the Co-captains Roger Johnson and Jim Srsen in spearheading the Blossoms to their seventh consecu- tive share of the Gopher conference championship and their third straight West Sub-district championship. Seven seniors bade farewell to black and white basketball as the suits are packed in moth balls wait- ing for next season. They are: Roger ’’Moose” Johnson as he finishes three years of a colorful high school basketball; Jim Srsen,a sharp shooting forward playing first string for two years; game Jerry Srsen playing two years of varsity ball; scrappy Clair Coughlin, who lacked size, but made up for it by the de-’ sire to succeed; black eyed Ken Mamuson, a steady ball player through the season; David Klemmensen and Jerome Severtson proving capable sixth and seventh men, as they furnished the needed spark when the chips were down. I, as coach of the Blossoms, feel that the season was very successful as we finished with a 14-6 record. The big disappointment of the season to all being our final one point defeat to a determined Rose Creek team for the district B” championship. Returning for next year’s squad will be juniors; Bernie Kubicek, Herman Thissen, Harry Dannen, Lor- en Rasmussen, and David Christianson. Moving up from the B” squad will be: Clarence Wincentsen, Paul Birgin, Eric Nelson, and Gaylord Tollefson, who have shown some good basketball qualities during their ”B” days. Best of luck to you seniors! May your good sportsmanship always be your leading trail! To the var- sity for next year: Let’s go and get them! Many thanks to the resourceful Jim Coggins for the fine job he did as student manager. -- 26 -- Row 1: D. Ashpole, J. Pirkl, B. Deets, R. Peterson, T. McDonald. Row 2: R. Myers, Student Manager, D. There are ten teams in the tournament with the captains elected by the members. The team that wins the tournament gets 65 points and the runner-up gets 55 point. -.These points count towards the letters and pins the girls may earn. They may also earn points by bowling, tumb- ling team, hiking, skating, golfing and other outside activities. When a girl has earned 450 points she is entitled to a letter, and when she has earned 700 points she gets a pin if she is a senior. Each year the highlight of the G.A.A. is the class tournaments. Each class has its own team and captain. The team that wins receives a basketball metal and gets their class year put on the girl’s basketball trophy. The senior Letterwomen of 1953 are: Charlotte Betlach, Geraldine Amundson, Helen Hansen, Myma Filley, Sylvia Harms, Connie Pirkl, LaVonne Robinson, Margie Stoltz, Janice Decker, and Rose Jacobson. — 32 — Left to right: Row 1: D.
