Klaomickt Kwznvcficui Zfrewvrd Our parents and the faculty and administration of Bloomfield High School have dedicated much of their time and effort to the formation of our characters and the development of our minds. Perhaps the immortal words of General Douglas MacArthur can best express the hopes for the success of their efforts: Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, brave enough to face himself when he is afraid, one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, humble and gentle in victory. Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds, a son who will know Thee-and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge. Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Let him learn to stand up in the storm, let him learn compassion for those who fail. Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men, one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past. And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom and the meekness of true strength. Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, I have not lived in vain. We see Kathy Graziano, Avrohm Melnick, Lee Michelson, and Dave Ryan, members of the French National Honor Society, and Betsey Kahn, Latin II award winner, in earnest conversation. In the next room is a conference of major historical importance involving the Big Three-Dave Ryan fthe Trinity Book Prize winnerj, Doug Simpson fthe Yale Book Prize winnerj, and Ricky Hoff fthe Harvard Book Prize winnerj. Perhaps they should discuss their problem with Judy Wright, the recipient of the American History Award. Across the hall Dar- nella Cordier, winner of the Connecticut Association of Women's Dean and Counselor's Award, is in a very secret conference. Avrohm Melnick, who was awarded the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Medal, is in a discussion with three great writers of our time, Dave Cohen, Donna Dumas, and Bill Vogel who received Courant Scholastic Writing Awards. It is hoped that all of these conferences will end early enough so all can attend the junior Prom, with music by Al Jarvis, to be held on May tenth. Realizing the importance of this event, our cameras bring you an on the spot picture. The formal, entitled Fmztaiizz, is brought to you by chairmen Barb Bercowetz and Barry Katz, with decorations by Diane MacMillan, Phil Washburn, and staff. It is certain that the dance will never be forgotten, especially by Queen Barb Bercowetz and King Bill Tummillo. We certainly consider it to be the highlight of our third season. We bring you now to a pleasant farewell where we see Dave Ryan and joe Mumford, Nutmeg Boy's State Representatives, and Peg Brimley and Debbie Bruno, Laurel Girl's State Representatives, being seen off by alter- nates Curt Dudley, Art Adoff, and Darnella Cordier, Kathy Graziano, selected as a delegate, is unable to attend. Finally we come to a close with our cameras focused on the Graduation Honor Ushers-Barb Bercowetz, Debbie Bruno, Darnella Cordier, Curt Dudley, Kathy Graziano, Ricky Hoff, Patty McGuigan, Dave Ryan, Doug Simpson, Bill Tummillo, Sandy Weaver-Bey, and Dolores Yacobucci. It seems that everyone has been smiling for the Can did Camera and we now look forward to our final season! We welcome you back to the last season, presenting BHS Reports, a special news documentary brought to you by a new sponsor, Mr. Dorr. First of the big events in the news are the election results: president-jim Roberts, vice-president-Dolores Yacobucci, secretary-Patty McGuigan, treasurer-Dave Ryan, and Student Council-Curt Dudley fpresidentj, Debbie Bruno, Marji DiMeo, Michele Hayes, Chris Lynch, Pat Pearson, Bill Tummillo, and honorary members Dave Ryan and Luz Helena Velasquez. We now turn to a discussion between Carolyn Burns, AFS Student to Belgium, and Luz Helena Velasquez, AFS Student from Colombia. It seems they are busy discussing the dif- ferent customs of the different countries. And now to the grand social event of the year-Club Serenade-presented on December eighteenth. Thanks to Diane Dadiskos and john Rodgers, the general chairmen, and their staff, this semi-formal entitled A W'inter'.r Dream created a wonderful memory for all who attended and danced to the music of Tommy Yalanis. This dance, with Diane Dadiskos as queen and Luz Helena Velasquez as honorary queen and the beautiful decorations of chairmen Kathy Griffin and Dale Cicero, truly produced an amazing winter's dream. And next a report on the sports event of the year which took place on December twenty-first. The Seniors accomplished a never-before-heard-of feat-they defeated the Faculty in the annual AFS basketball game. While still in the winning spirit, we take you to our basketball team, managed by Phil Wasilausky and Carlo Magno and supported by Duane Cicero, Carl Guarco, Clifford Gunn, and Marshall Pittman-going out for a fine season. The team is cheered on by Varsity cheerleaders Barb Bercowetz, Debbie Bruno, Donna Bruno, Jean Burbulis, Marji DiMeo, Leslie Monson, and Dolores Yacobucci. Also arousing school spirit are junior Varsity cheerleaders Mary Lou Bednarczyk, Sandy Canter, Laura Manekofsky, Patty McGuigan, Gail Miller, and Liza Newton. To change pace we look in on the National Honor Society where we find some new members, Art Adoff, Dave Cohen, Kathy Corrette, and Ann Davis,,in conference with the National Merit Semi-Finalists Charles Allen, Charles Chrystal, Ann Davis, and Doug Simpson. Listening in on this discussion are those who received Letters of Com- mendation: Brian Colton, Kathy Graziano, Betsey Kahn, Avrohm Melnick, Lee Michelson, Dave Moss, Frank Ru- bino, and Bill Vogel. As the meeting adjourns we are able to catch sight of the activities in the last half of the season which we know you want to hear about. The class play, Senior Reception, outing, banquet, and graduation were more than anyone could imagine. With this bustling activity, we must close. Thank you for allowing us to present this, our final program of the season. Clary H iJ'l01 fd72J'.' Diane-Louise Kenney Kathy Corrette Penny Wasem Kathy Graziano 5 fa, Q., iii 'nf F! However, this record did not qualify the Warhawks for the State Tournament. The tri-captains were Joe Mumford, Bill Tummillo, and Russ Gostyla. Powers J Christian C Guarco L Sokol Coach Paterno During the 1965-1966 basketball season, the Warhawks earned an im- pressive season's record of 15 victories against only 4 defeats even though we were classed as a large CAD school for the first time. Sparked by the fine shooting and rebounding of co-captains Carl Guarco and Iohn Christian, the team started the season in fine style by easily disposing of Suffield by an 87-64 score and Northwest Catholic by an 84-65 count. In the next game, though, we met Windsor Locks' deliberate ball control game and were upset by the Raiders 47-49. Coupled with two defeats at the hands of St. Thomas Aquinas, this game led to our only disappointment of the season- failure to successfully defend our Charter Oak Conference crown. The most exciting game of the season was our return match with Windsor Locks. After fighting to a 22-14 halftime lead. despite the fact that the Lock- towners held the ball for several minutes at a time, we ran away from them in the second half for a 53-39 triumph and a tie for second place in the conference. As the yearbook goes to press, the Warhawks have stormed to a 71-66 first round CIAC Class A tournament victory over Pulaski of New Britain after originally being ranked 8th, Lettermen this year were Carl Guarco, john Christian, Duane Cicero, Marshall Pittman, Dave Powers, and Phil Wilson. Carl Guarco, the team's leading scorer, won both the rebounding and field goal percentage trophies. Marshall Pittman was the best foul shooter on the team and Duane Cicero had the most assists. The records this year were kept by Phil Wasilausky, head manager, who was ably assisted by john Pelkey and Carlo Magno. I wanted to know more about your system of life, your schools, your language and your government. I also Wanted to tell you about my country. I must say, I was particularly interested in the English language because many of the books in colleges are in English. Too, in my country English is required for the better positions. In 1964, I learned about the A.F.S. Program from some students in my city who told us about the program and their experiences in the United States. They made it sound exciting and very worthwhile, so I applied. I feel that this is one of the greatest experiences in my life, and I found the people even more wonderful than I expected. I will never forget my American family because they became the principal part of my American life, they have given me love and understanding. They have made me feel like a real member of their family. One person that has helped me more than anyone else is Kathy, my American sister. I have made many close friends who have been very willing to help me. Also, I shall never forget the teachers and the students who gave me so much help in learning English. One of the things that impressed me about the United States was the pace of life. In my first weeks here, I found it very difficult to keep up with this pace, but now, I am racing around like every one else. Also, in my city I never learned to share in the household duties, but I have learned to help with all of them and I think that it is very good to know how to do these things, but I don't really like to practice them. School life in South America is different. We do not have the chance to choose our subjects. We are told by the government what we have to take -and we have more subjects than you do. Our school year begins the first week in February and finishes in the last week of November, our day begins at eight and ends at five with two hours off at noon time. Another thing, the teachers change rooms and the students stay in the same room, but the students are allowed to talk and stand out in the halls until the bell rings for the next class. There have been many moments I shall never forget: Halloween night with all the costumes, parade, and gaiety, the A.F.S. picnic when I received my charm bracelet, my trip to Massachusetts when I visited Boston, Gloucester, and Endicott College, the World's Fair in New York, an A.F.S. week end in Glastonbury and family picnics by the water. The basketball games were very exciting and something that I really loved. I enjoyed all the noise, laughter, cheering and excitement that went with each game and our team was real great. The most wonderful memory of all was a surprise birthday party that my friends gave me. I shall always remember that evening. I find it difficult for me to put into words how much this year at Bloomfield has meant to me, but I hope that some day some of you will be able to come to my country so I can return the kindness you all have shown me. enior dzndid The boys gym really does need those drapes! fl If vou can't ioin them, destroy them.
