It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas? Not this December! It was the closing of the month before snow fell on Bloomfield. Ice packed roads paralyzed traffic and temperatures hovered around zero throughout the winter. BHS students missed six days of school because of the ice and snow. Along with last-minute Christmas shopping, students also found time to cram for semester tests. Tests were given the week before Christmas vacation. The day before break students were en- tertained with a basketball game between the senior boys and the men faculty. The faculty slipped by with a very close win. Also for the first time the senior girls took on the women faculty. Despite their efforts the seniors lost 20-5. Along with welcoming the new year in January came predictions of a short recession and possible gas rationing. The year 1979 was proclaimed Year of the Child by the United Nations and was also the centennial year of Albert Einstein's birth. In February the student council gave a sweetheart dance Sadie Hawkins style. Also the girls basketball team and the boys basketball team both won their sectional titles. The Nightmare in Jonestown was an event that will linger for a long time in the minds of the people. In Guyana some 900 cult members of the People's Temple died in a self-imposed ritual of mass suicide and murder. They were the followers of Rev. Jim Jones, a once respected Indiana bom humanitarian. A happier note in the world news was the 50th birthday of Mickey Mouse, the internationally known Walt Disney character. ffdig AND INTERNA TIONAL CRISIS I ' ff , W3v5v,g,.g,.i ,,,. . , . ....' .:2:ff.:mggzgf 6f We I , W, ,, 4

HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. . . In the months of September, October, and November, students returned to the discipline and study required by the courses they had signed up for the previous spring. When school began the total enrollment in the upper four grades was 402. This figure varied somewhat throughout the year but stayed near the 400 mark. Many activities kept students busy throughout these months. Fall sports were in full swing along with several local festivals. Clubs completed their membership roster for the year. A large percentage of BHS students participated in several of these activities. Band students were very busy this fall. They marched in the Scotland Festival along with three other county high school bands. The BHS band presented an outdoor concert at the Apple Festival with the Flag Corps and Pom Pon girls performing also. Students enjoyed many different activities and booths at the Apple Festival, including a Pizza Eating Contest and a P.F.R. disco dance sponsored by the Jaycees. The world outlook at this time was not a very cheerful scene. Peace talks between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israel Prime Minister Menachem Begin had not progressed well and there was trouble brewing in Iran with the rising movement against the Shah. Here in Bloomfield the outlook was considerably brighterg students were hopeful and looking for- ward to a happy and prosperous year. 3

Xa! AFFECT gf OUR EVER YDA Y LIVES Q 1 if ,I In the months of March, April, and May, many exciting things happened. Early in March the chorus held a disco to raise money for the senior chorus jackets. Tennis was added to the agenda of girls' activities. Strut and Fret put on a sensational production of Oklahoma in which they made a very good profit. Seniors are usually spot lighted in their last few days at BHS. In April the seniors received their announcements and caps and gowns. This year prom and commencement were followed one right after the other on the days of May 11 and May 12. In the national scene, we dealt with such crises as the teamster's strike which nearly paralyzed the country and the Islamic government took over Iran and threatened us with a cut off of our oil supply. On the brighter side of the national news was the signing of a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt which was helped along by our President Carter. 5
