APPLE FESTIVAL Golden leaves, chilly weather, and the Apple Festival all signify that autumn has arrived. This year the 9th annual Apple Festival opened with a performance by the BHS Band. The BHS Flag Corp and Pom Pon girls also performed on the opening night. A variety of stands loaded with food, crafts, jewelry, antiques, and knick knacks covered the cour- thouse lawn. Many BHS organizations participated in operating stands to raise money. Upper: The outcome of this year's Apple Festival Queen Contest was Kim Bartlett, second runner-up: Tammy Hendren, Queeng and Kris Rollison, first runner-up. Lower Left: Brenda Dobson bears the bitter cold as she makes change for the rides. Lower Right: Lisa Axe finds that coke is a great help while finishing a pizza. Richard Bladen and Kim Cook were the winners of the Pizza Eating Contest.

The 4-H fair, cheerleading, pom pon, and journalism institutes were also main attractions for students this summer. Driver's Education was in- cluded in the usual routine of some unlucky students also. Allin all, the summer was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Upper: Lifeguards Diane Partain and Marilea Grider insure the safety of the swimmers while soaking up the sun. Lower Left: After placing first in their division at the Greene County Cheerleading Contest, the B-team cheerleaders examine their trophy. Lower Right: One of the many trials of learning to swim is developing the skill of diving.

FESTIVAL SUCCESS DESPITE BITTER COLD Q hmra ,,,, 'awk ,,t Entertainment covered gospel, country, disco music, and a square dance. The main attraction for the students was the disco. The disco was given by the Doc of Rock, the disc jockey from PFR Rock 103. Everyone tried out the latest disco dances they had practiced during the week. Tammy Hendren reigned as the '78 Apple Festival queen after the first night's activities. Apple Festival queen contestants collected donations from businesses for the Edith Gray Scholarship, presented their talent, and were interviewed by the judges. The Apple Festival is sponsored by the Bloomfield Jaycees. They are responsible for planning, organizing, and arranging the- festival. After everyone has gone home, members of the Jaycees are busy working during the early morning hours cleaning up the courthouse lawn. Upper Left: George Ockerman, demonstrates his ability of making apple butter the old-fashioned way. Upper Right: Using the courthouse steps to relax, Richie Williams decides what he will do next at the Apple Festival. Lower: After a fast ride down the slide, Charlie Michaels and Danny Todd jump out of the way of other riders. 11
