meslgm., apufws tateo The wo cheerful little women laughed heartily as they drove out of town It was the first time that they had both acted on impulse Miss Miles had suddenly had an urge to go to the Kentucky Derby and Mtss Baynes had fallen in with the idea Very soon they were enroute The fact that they were amateurs at the Sport of Kings definitely added to their desire to see this race Upon entering the gate they noticed a poor underfed bum picking up cigarette butts out of the gutter Havmg a kind heart and a weak stomach Miss Miles decided to give him a dollar for a good nutritious meal. As the bum expressed his thanks he handed her one of his cards upon whtch were written the fol lowing words Come to Bumgarden Motor Sales for your next set of tires Lexte Crowe representative It was an advertisement Following the crowd to a certain booth and wtthout knowing Just what was gomg on they placed S20 on Railscrapper to wm When they ftnally found a seat the race was ready to begin. The votce of the announcer sounded very familiar Looking at their racing form they discovered that it was J im Stafford Imagine their surprise to discover also that the owner of Railscraper was none other than petite Joyce Hudson and the jockey was mighty Max Townsend Yes it was an excitmg race at the last mmute Ratlscraper sprtnted and won Our travelers had won S380 apiece Wonderful! They would tour the southern states now Because the gas tank was almost empty they stopped at Bowling Green Kentucky and decided to eat there. As they pulled into the combtnauon gas station and restaurant, a man came rushing out to ftll the s tank. Hts features seemed famlhar, and upon closer observat1on they dtscovered that he was Harold Bough, He informed them that the food at the Filthy Platter was delictous From the attracttve waitress Miss Carolyn Padgett, our travelers each ordered a rare cheeseburger with onion and a glass of milk. Horrorsl Carolynyelled the order back tothe cook Herb King Walk a couple of Swtss cows past the stove cry on them and thenJu1ce a couple Herbert was an excellent cook he followed the mstructtons Upon arriving Miss Baynes decided to go to the Grand Ole Opry leaving Miss Miles 1n their hotel room enjoying Shakespeare rather than seemg Elvis Presley 1n person The first person who attracted her attentton was a girl in the front seat watung excitedly for Elvis to appear on stage Suddenly the gtrl, no one but Bette Combs fatnted Rlchard Skinner was Elvis substitute tonight Poor Elvis had had aheart attach because his Hound Dog stepped on his blue suede shoes Rtchard announced that Lena Kay Vest Graham was next on the program as Mmme Pearl s stand in The next day's yourney was planned for Rock City Gardens Tennessee Not betng famlltar wtth the roads they lost the1r way The first house they saw was an old shack held up by many campaign signs beartng these words Jerry flkey Toon for dogcatcher of Skunkston County Just as they were about to knock the door opened and a man introduced htmself as J oe Anderson campaign manager for Jerry Toon After a lengthy chat and a hearty meal wtth Jerry and Joe Miss Baynes and Miss Miles were dtrected to their destination where they had a good n1ght's sleep As the ladies were touring Georgia they noticed signs advertising a circus at Atlanta they stopped to watch the ctrcus which they decided was a flop The only good attraction was the Fat Man Jerry Smith. At Daytona Beach Miss Miles decided to enter her V 8 Chevy tn the Daytona Drags She received a hst of drtvers from the Idle Wtld Hot Rod Club president, sleepy Bob Jackson. Some of the farruhar drivers were Mary Jane Blue Goose Radcliff Daniel Speedy Quillen Slurley Faster Foster but Bob said that Sally Monk ' Maller with her speed shlfts would get the most out of the outdated 56 wluch was beaten by 10 car lengths At Miami they decided to have a mght on the town at Cecil Blaker's rught club wtth hula dancer Karen Flater Blaker and James Brando Bault for entertainment.
