Principal PEYER WIl5ON Am -uan I Principal To the Members of the Class of l96O: It is somehow appropriate that you should select some of the sayings of Confucius, a great Chinese teacher, as division page keynotes of Memories 1960. Moderation, humility, the WOITH of tue individual, under- standing, wisdom---these are a part of a long Chinese tradition, rooted deeply in each succeeding genera.tion's family groups. These teachings and these vmues can be respected, for they stand out in snarp and clean contrast with the materialistic, state-directed Communist totali- tarianism which presently rules the lives of the more than six hundred million Chinese people on the mainland of Asia. Americans have chosen the way of freedom based on moral and religious beliefs which view the philosophy, aims and methods of Communism as foreign to the values of the Founding Fathers, of our own fathers, and of ourselves. Let us cling to the standards and values of Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln, lest some day these values endure only in books and dusty records and not in the lives of men. FDREVVDRD MEMORIES '60 has chosen for its theme The Wisdom of the Orient. The practical wisdom of the Oriental peoples is expressed in the teachings of Confucius. These teach- ings are still followed, and the quotations of Confucius are applicable to today's life. The bamboo on the cover symbolizes the nature of the Oriental peoples. Resilient, bamboo bends with the wind, when the wind ceases, it stands tall again. The people of the Orient bend under the weight of floods, famine, wars, and repression. Yet, from hard- ship they develop endurance. Unique in its simplicity, Oriental art ex- presses deep thought and emotion. lt mir- rors the outlook of the people. It is direct yet subtle. Simplicity and subtle humor are por- trayed in our little character, Ben-Go. A yearbook more than elaborates a theme, it echoes the time in which we live. In this modern world of unremitting tension and in- security, we strive for the practicality, en- durance, and simplicity that The Wisdom of the Orient offers.
