F Senior Class J9 ? I n BLOOMFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS SENIOR HIOH SCHOOL aLooMHE1.o, New JERSEY 160 BROAD STREET HARRY M, RICE Pfanzzpul CHARLES E. MORGAN Aswan' Pfimpql PETER w1LsoN Auananf to the Principal JU-He, 1959 To the Members of the Class of l959: The theme of your fine yearbook is Storehouse of Knowledge. Initially this connoted to me a sense of mere acquisition of informa- tion, a. second and more illuminating appraisal gave understanding that knowledge essentially is not a collection of' data, but a clear perception of truth. Just as one small candle can shut out all the blackness of night, knowledge can lead the way to light and to right, in a world half darkened by curtains of iron or bamboo. Knowledge may be power, but it can be power for 5521 only if we remember that knowledge is a clear perception of truth. From knowledge, and reverence, patriotism, service and loyalty, we learn to live. That is, we learn to live in a great democratic republic, where our quest is for truth, for justice and for human dignity. These, surely, are in your Storehouse of Knowledge. We on the staff of the Bloomfield Senior High School have been your teachers and your guides during these past three years. You are now at the threshold of a more mature life, and it is with a real sense of price and partnership that I, for the entire staff, salute your theme for Memories, l959. Let this theme continue to be your - and our, guide over the years. Let us respect and be guided by knowledge, and let us respect excellence. with good wishes , . HARRY M. Hollingsworth re- tired from his position as superintendent of schools. He has been associated with the Bloom- field school system for thirty-four years, the last seventeen as coordinator of the total school pro- gram. He has felt that the most outstanding at- tributes of his work were the development and expansion of the educational and building pro- grams of the schools. After devoting thirty-nine years to Bloomfield's educational system, Jerome C. Salsbury retired this year. Upon graduating from Bucknell Uni- versity, he spent four years as the teacher in a one-room-schoolhouse. From i920 to T947, this eminent educator held various teaching and ad- ministrative posts. Meanwhile, he earned his M.A. degree and doctorate from Columbia University. Dr. Salsbury and his wife reside in Livingston, 11! 's.--I llis. F Dr. Jerome C. In addition to his work, Dr. Hollingsworth is active in professional organiza- tion and in civic community affairs. where both relax by gardening. The green thumb tendency is evident in Dr. Salsbury's plant-filled office. The Rotary, Bloomfield Educa- tion Association, and the New Jersey Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development oc- cupy his interests. Dr. Salsbury's unfailing interest in young people and in promoting the profession of teaching has benefited Bloomfield and its educational system greatly. MISS ANNA J. MILLER Dedicated people are hard to find. Bloome tield High School has been fortunate to have Anna J. Miller working unstintingly for thirty- six years as a capable member of the history department. Preparing first at Plattsburgh State Normal, Miss Miller received a Bachelor of Science and Master's degree in both literature and social science at Columbia University. She majored in advanced political science and international economics at the New School for Social Re- search. This quiet but cheerful boy acquired many friends during his two years in B.H.S. To many, his name will bring to mind the ingenious work he did for the dis- play committee and his unfailing sup- port at Bloomfield High School sports events. CAROL ANN DELAND To anyone who knew her, Carol was the soul of friendship and the essence of youth at its best. The unselfish in- terest she possessed for everything and everyone gave her the reputation of a loyal friend and an enjoyable com- panion. The memory of this gay, sprightly little classmate will always be with us. We shall think of Carol as an inseparable member of our class. JAMES CULLEN li A general store functions mainly to provide its customers with staples, the necessities for living. Our general store, B.H.S., provides us with the finest basic learning available, offering courses in the preparation for college and for the business world. Our school also meets the needs ofthe student who is advanced in his class. Staples Concrete emphasis was placed this year on pure scholarship achievement. Setting the precedent with honor assemblies after each report, recognition includes a certificate ot merit. Stu- dents quality with four A's in major subjects. The rec- ognition assemblies have proven an incentive and an asset. The numbers of A students increased with each report.
