The Future Homemakers of America is a national organization of pupils studying homemaking in the high schools of the U. S., Hawaii and Puerto Rico. It is a non-profit organization with 8 purposes, of- fering opportunity to develop social qualities, promote better home life, encourage democracy, promote international good will, provide wholesome individual and group recreation and to further interests in Home Economics. The Bloomfield Chapter is one of 6,108 affiliated chapters and supplies 53 of the 237,133 members in 47 states and territories, lt was organized in 1949 and has made great progress, Among the major activities of the year were a Men's Fashion Show, Emily Post Week, Slave Day, Revenge Day, trip to Sub-District Meeting where one of our members was elected Sub-District Secre- tary, FFA-FHA Party, and the purchase of a punch bowl and cups set for the Home Economics Department, with some of the over S100 made from their activities. ' The Home Economics girls' dreams of moving into the new build- ing partially came true this year. Even though the living-room, bed- room and bath were not furnished, we were happy to occupy the lab- oratory with its 4 unit kitchens and increased facilities for clothing work. The good work done in the Home Economics classes was evidenced by the Christmas and Easter Fashion Shows, by the notebooks compiled on Textiles and Fabrics, Color, and on House Planning and Home Fur- nishings. ln order to gain a more complete knowledge of the business of Homemaking and living with people, the Home Economics girls ex- changed classes with the Agriculture boys for two weeks. The boys were given short units on Manners and Etiquette, Fundamentals in Cooking and Operation of the Sewing Machine, while the girls were instructed in the use of simple tools and woodworking. With the increasing number of girls interested in Home Econ- omics, the lovely new building is a necessity. Over a period of time, the classes will have the experience of selecting the furnishings and helping to equip it so as to provide expleriences as nearly like a home situation as possible. MRS.
