IIIIIIIA S lllllllllllli PIIIIISIIAM TOP ROW: Alvin Smyth, Jr., Instructor, Glynn McBride, Supervisor, Mildred Cooper, Secre- tary. BOTTOM ROW: Instructors, Gilbert Jones, Charles Reinbott, L. B. Vance and B. Rust Brown. The Veterans' Training Program was started in Bloomfield High School in December, I946, with 25 men enrolled. Now we have five full classes with l25 men in training. This section of the Yearbook, the first of its kind in our school, is dedicated to whatever effort has been made by these men, whether still in the mind, planned, or actually carried out on their farms, toward proper land use and conservation of the soil. We firmly believe that Dr. W. A. Albrecht, Chairman, Department of Soils, University of Missouri, was right when he said, We are what we eat, and that there is a very 'close connection between our soils, our food, and ourselves. We also subscribe to the words of Charles E. Sweet when he said the following about OUR SOIL - AMERICAN HERITAGE The Soil is the Heritage of Our Nation. We, who call ourselves the owners of the Soil, are only its custodians for a brief span of time. The Soil is our most priceless Possession . . . and our greatest Responsi- bility. Freedom has never flourished in a hungry and impoverished land. God grant us the Intelligence to respect our Soil, and the Will to con- serve it in all ways, so that when our period of Stewardship is done, we may pass on the Soil with its Fertility and Fruitfulness undiminished. Thus, our children's children and their children's children shall not know want, and their Nation will remain the Land of Plenty and the Home of Freedom. 26
