Foreword WVe have faithfully tried to make this Bee a collector of the choicest ho11ey of B. H. S. for the year of 1924. If in years to come this book recalls to its reader pleasant memories of his high school days, then our aim has been attained. Page Three CThe Building Sinee moving i11to this new buihling, the Illoomtiehl Iligh Sehool has been well organize-tl and equipped to meet the needs of young people of Davis Uounty. A stanllarcl eollege preparatory course takes eare of those who plan to Plllltl' eollege immediately after eompleting the high sehool 1-ourse. About half of all our graduates go to eollege earlier or later. 'Phe state of Iowa has the problem of providing teachers for the rural schools. 'l'o get a sullieient number ot teachers without establish- ing more state normal sehools, the state has designatetl eertain sehools to be Normal Training lIigh Schools. The llloomtiehl lligh Sehool is one, and its normal training eourse is aided by the state. Over twenty young people Complete this eourse eaeh year. llloomiiehl and vieinity is a purely agrieultural community. That fart has been recognized in the introtluetion of a vorutional agriculture eourse, aided by the state and the federal government unfler the Snfth- llughes law. The eourse is open only to boys who at-tually live on farms. To meet the oreupational needs of boys and girls who expect to tintl employment in the business house, a eommereial course has been eslablishefl. It oifers typewriting, stenography, and bookkeeping. About ninety-four per rent of all the girls beeome responsible for the management of homes. 'Phat is why the state and the federal gov- ernments eneourage home eeonomies eourses and aid the schools that maintain them. Again, the llloomiiehl lligh Sc-hool is abreast of the times, and almost every girl who goes here gets into the popular home eeonomirs work. l'ly.1 Pour A 1 l':x:'jm- Nix Faculty H. H. S. up to that time. The number was fifty-two. and this seemed exceedingly large, especially i11 the old building. The hearts of the Freshmen were heavy as they first ascended the stairs, feel- ing as if they had undertaken an endless proposition. Of these fifty-two eighteen have been summoned elsewhere, but the remaining thrity-four with the addition of five more have successfully mastered the daily prob- lems placed before them and are now in line for their diplomas. The class has taken a deiinite part in many activities, having had at least one winner in the local Declamatory Contest each year, a de- bater on the first team this year, and a district winner in the State' Essay Contest. The class has excelled in athletics, having captains as well as many other stars in football, basketball, and track. The present Senior class is the iirst to be graduated from the new High School building. Let us hope that they will be a credit to it. The oiiicers of the class for the first, second, and third years were as follows: FRESHMAN President - - - - - - Okle CON' Vice President - - I. O. Harper Treasurer - - - Alfred White Secretary - ---- - llrI21Py Ke8giH SOPHOMORE Ppgsidenf, . . ---- - - Claude Porter Vice President - - Bernice Wilcoxson Secretary and Treasurer - - - I. 0- HQIPPGP JUNIOR President - - - - - Alfred XVhite Vice President - - - - Mary Keegan Secretary and Treasurer - Ull2il'lffS CPRVCH 1 age Twenty-Two Entertainments Masquerade Party The class of 1924, broke into the social world on March 10, 1922, when they entertained the Freshmen of that year at a mfisquerul-e party. The corridors of the old building were very prettily decorated with shamrocks in honor of St. Patrick. A splendid lJl'O2l',llll was carried out, and everyone had a good time. Junior-Senior Banquet They again displayed their ability to entertain at the Junior-Senior Banquet, May 19, 1923. At ti 130 the class with their guefzts, the faculty and class of 15323, gathered at the M. IC. Church, the basement of which was decorated in junior colors. A huge bird cage had been built ol' orange and black crepe paper, in which were three tables awaiting the arrival of the banqueters. A sumptuous dinner was served, at the con- clusion of which the following toast program was given: Toastmaster The Aviary The Owls llootl lloot! The Eagles Twitters - The Doves P00 Coo The Oats The Flight Vocal Solo - - - - Alfred lVhite, '24 - Louise Wiseman, '24 - Mary Keegan, '24 - - Lowell'Reed, '23 - Bernice lVilcoxson, '24 - - Paul Junkins, '23 - Okle Foy, '24 - Opal I Dickson, '23 - Miss Duffield Claude Townsend, '23 - - Miss Slemons Kid Party O11 Saturday evening, February 23, the Seniors, feeling that they wished once more to indulge in some childhood fun before taking up the more serious responsibilities of life, threw aside their dignity, and enjoyed one of the most successful social events of the year. The study hall had undergone a miialculous change, and resembled nothing less than a nursery when the children arrived. The faculty of course were there, and one could not have dis- tinguished some of them from the Seniors. One of the chief amusements of the evening was a school with Leota llell as teacher, another was a flag drill in which eight small boys marched to the tune of a real brass ba11d. Still other pastimes were con- tests, games, and plays. Then came the refreshments, done up in sacks topped off with an all day sucker, which was in keeping with the kid idea. But the 0116 painful thing about being children is that they must re- tire early. So in order to make the party seem more true to its name, the youngsters departed at an early hour and were soon tucked in their cozy beds. l'ag.:e Twenty I ues i Class Prophecy Iles Moines, Iowa, May 10, 1934. II. S. r I saw in last week's issue ol' the llloomtield p Lper that the Ladies' Aid Society met with Mrs. lleulah Jones. I showed the article to Hilda llorn and Evaline Gleason, who are teaching in the IIome Economics department ol' the Roosevelt lligh School. They said that Mrs. Jones was formerly I Iculah Wilkinson, who had been married to the Reverend R. ff. Jones. the 11ew minister at the l'rcsbyterian church. It also stated that Mrs. SIISRIIIIILI lVelch, the assistant Sunday School Superintendent, had given them a talk on Child XV0li!21I'9, and that Miss Esther Griffin, the orchestra leader of the Baptist church, had favored them with a violin solo. , . , , ts' Several of our classmates are in this city. The other day I went downto the Sturgis Iiutcher Shop, tot course you remember Bobbyj to get some wieners for dinner because Leota llell a11d Mary Evans were coming out. They were in the city attending the IVomen's Rights Con- vention of which Mary is now the President and Leota the Secretary. Bob said that l1e had received a letter from Pete Coy, who is coaching the football team at the State University of Iowa, illltl his letter stated that IJeXVitt and Minerva llenge had purchased a farm on Fox River, and are starting a modern dairy there. YVeek before last I was at home on a visit. The old town is much the same with the exception of the school house, which, because of the numerous rat holes, is undergoing repairs by order of the president of the board, LeRoy M1-Avoy. llarry llerod is overseer ol' the popcorn staml on the east side of tl1e square. Donald Newland is pricticiug medicine there, and is noted for his success in removing corns aml exterminating bunions. IVhile there l was invited to a banquet at the beautiful new home of Mrs. Rachel Taylor Webster. Rachel is vice president of the State Federation of NVomen's Clubs. Gerald Mills and his new bride, Thelma llunter, were present. Gerald is a dress designer in Chicago. IIis wife had o11 one ot his latest creations. It was ot orange velvet with little red rosebuds here and there. Several celluloid bluebirds hung gracefully from the waist line. After tl1e banquet we went to the theater and saw lflrmyntrude Smith in her latest production, Diamond Rings and Rolling Pins. The comedy was very funny, featuring t'hnrles Craven iu f'Short 'a,.,e lwenty-Four '95 Legs a11d Long Trousers. I understand the comedy was taken 'from Bernice W'ilc0xson's new book, Long Skirts and Short Steps. This is only one of -the -many books that llernice has written. You stated in your letter that Mary Keegan had stopped to visit you while on her lycemn trip through the Southern countries. I understand that she is to be married to I. 0. Harper, who accompanies the troupe as platform manager. This must be a very romantic tour. I suppose you know that Paul Grant is superintendent of schools at Newton, Iowa, a11d Lorene Mctlarty is the commercial teacher there. They both were graduated from llrake Universit y. Mary and Leota informed me that Erma Louderback and Chloe Proctor had just received their nurses' diplomas, and that they expect to sail for England in two months to care for the Queen, who is going to be operated on for adenoids. Marvin Patterson is now the typesetter for the Needlecraft, that helpful magazine that all thrifty housewives receive. The other day I received a letter from Hazel Livingston, who is the wife of a prominent lawyer in Lancaster, and she tells me that Glen Post is now selling lVatkins Remedies in the northern part of Missouri. Hazel had just returned from Chicago. IVhile there she went through Sears, Roebuck K White's mail order house, of which Alfred White is president. She was invited out to his home, where llelen Waggener, his charming wife, entertained her royally. Lucille Rhodes Hopkins has probably left your home by this time. I wish you would send me some of her original cake recipes that she left with you. I presume she will like her new home in Toledo, Ohio, since two of her classmates have already settled there, Russell Allen and Ora Lough, who are the leading bankers of that city, owning the Toledo National Bank. I am so glad you forwarded me your letter from Louise NViseman, saying that she enjoyed very much her missionary work i11 Japan. I vi - ited your sister Hilda's classes yesterday. She had just returned from Peoria, Illinois, where she had been visiting friends. IVhile there she found that Claude Porter and Floyd Hubbartt both reside in that city. Floyd is the owner of a large farm machine manufacturing plant, and Vlaude is a prominent lawyer. As you have been on your chicken ranch for so long, I thought you would enjoy hearing about the old classmates. I must close and get Michael's supper because he is on night shift at the coal mine. I am looking forward to the class reunion at Phicago next summer. Yours sincerely, Alice Ethell Clancey, ' 1313 Flay St., Iles Moines, Iowa. IVritten by Alice Ethell and Rosa Horn. CLASS OFFICERS President - ----- Hugh Seaburw Vic-e President - - - Curtis Irelan Sec-1-etary and Treasurer - Gerald Wfalker Page 'l'l1i1'ty-Two SE rarer Class History September 6, 1921, was a very important date to seventy-six boys and girls. It marked the opening of a new era in their lives -the be- ginning of their high school career. A few days were required for them to get settled in their classes and to get their work under way. Then nothing eventful happened, except such blunders as all Freshmen make. until March 16. On that evening the Freshmen were entertained by the Sophomoresat a masquerade party with the decorations and refreshments 0i!l'l':flIlg out the idea of St. Patrick's Day. In the latter part of the year, preparations were made for the Ileclamatory Contest. 011e of the members of the Freshman class carried off iirst honors in the humorous division. ln their second year, the class of '25 seemed more enthusiastic. and entered more heartily into the High School activities. The Freshman-Sophomore entertainment was a valentine party, which was given on February 16. Later the class decided to attempt another entertainment in the form of a Wiener roast. A few weeks later another wiener roast was held. 4' . In the local Declamatory Contest, three Sophomores were entered, one taking first in the humorous class, and another taking second in the oratorical. In the subdistrict contest, second honor was awarded to the local humorous winner. The Junior year brought forth better results in all respects. The social activities began with a wiener roast held in a neighboring pasture, and closed with the Junior-Senior banquet, the iirst banquet held in the ncw High School building. In the Declamatory Contest, five Juniors were entered, one taking first in the oratorical class, another taking second in the dramatic class, and still another taking second in the humorous class. In the Debating League, composed of ten members, five were Juniors. Two of them succeeded in making the second team, and one made the first team. In the Inter-class Track Meet held on April 29th, the Juniors tied for second place. Even though the class has not been very prominent in athletics, its rank in scholarship has been very good. The Sophomore Art Film Company invites you to assist in the production of a four-reel motion picture, Saturday evening, February 16. Come dressed in the screen role you have always yearned to play. Be on the lot at seven-thirty sharp! The Sophomore Class Producers and Directors. About one hundred and sixty responded to the above invitations and were received in the gymnasium which was converted into a Holly- wood studio. The red and white of St. Va1entine's day was in evidence in all the decorations, and hearts were easily trumps. The four reels were carried out as follows: Reel One Choosing' the most cleverly costumed movie star: Each con- testant, appearing within a large heart frame, was voted the reel thing, but the honors went to Esther Skinner as Larry Semon, Ova Mc- Mains as Shirley Mason, and llan Harper as Charlie Chaplin. Reel Two A romance of B. H. S., a four act scenario reely', written for the occasion and acted, too, in reel movie fashion. Reel Three A bit of real ism-an imitation of and take off on the faculty. Reel Four Real Food Partners were found by matching pictures of movie artists and the boys went in search of refreshments for two. Valentines were served, consisting of heart shaped meringues filled with red jello tipped with whipped cream, and all placed on lace paper doilies. Snapshots were taken of various groups by visiting Senior pro- tographers. Good night was said with 'freel regret. The elass entered with a determination to win and to bring forth good seholars a11d good athletes. This class was subjeet to the usual ordeal at the iii-st of tl1e year --initiations. Apparently all Sophomores, and 111a11y others besides, en- joyed administering the annual whippings. This seemed to give the Freshies the necessary start, for from that moment they grew ill pron1i11- euee Zllld power. The members of the c-lass, wishing to heeome better acquainted. dec-ided that it would be altogether proper that they have a weiner roast. The plan was carried out sueeessfully, allll as a result each felt that he knew his elassmates better than before. Later, o11 February 16, the Sophomores very kindly and wonderfully entertained the Freshmen at a Valentine party. The members have not only applied themselves to books, but to athletics as well. Basketball was the leading sport for both boys and girls. The boys 6Ilt0l'91l the intern-lass basketball tournament, and. even though they did 11ot win, they proved themselves to be worthy basketball players. They were also well represented in the interelass track meet, but were tlgillll unable to plaee for the pennant. i Ill the loeal lleelamatory Vontest, it was a Freshman who carried oft iirst ll0ll0l'S i11 the dramatic- division. Fo1'ty-l iVs Manual 'Traininq Bloomfield High School now possesses one of the largest and best equipped Manual Training rooms in this part of the State. It consists of one large working room, surrounded by tool and material cabinets and Containing new up-to-date benches, each supplied with a complete set of tools. This room opens into a large staining and varnishing room. Due to lack of funds, no power machinery has as yet been installed, but when it is, Bloomfield can offer one of the best courses possible in the way of Manual Training. 1 This year's course was a great improvement over previous years. It consisted of a twelve weeks' study of drawing and planning before the woodwork course was taken up. This course and the better equipment made it possible for the students to turn out a much higher class of furniture than was possible in previous years. The annual furniture exhibition was held in the gymnasium, where all the different pieces of furniture made during the year were exhibited before the school and the public. lloity Six -5 Y in , 1,52 5-'XM' 1 A, X ,--A ' ' .film elf W -WJ' , cf- ' V' Vai ' i xbhttw fi V f S vt?'3 i X we . :,-1 f X AF fix .ri , ' ' ' n 31935 . ,. . i . To illustrate: After studying soil erosion, the students con- structed a brush and wire obstruction to iill a ditch on one of the home farms. Last fall, after studying' seed corn, the class selected seed corn from the field of one of the best corn ggrowers in the county. In the study of soils, soil maps of the home farms were made. Soils were tested for acidity, the amount of lime necessary to grow alfalfa determined, and the lime applied. This spring after the class had studied pruning, sev- eral orchards were pruned. In connection with his class work, each student is required to keep records on a farm project during the summer. This year there will be tive alfalfa projects, six corn projects, one potato project, and an orchard project. They vary from one to six acres in size. It is advised that the student receive the net protits from his pro- ject. Also, if the work is done as directed, the student receives an extra school credit. Crops and soils were studied this year, and next year the class will take up the study of live-stock. Two of the boys are keeping records on live-stock projects now. Farm shop work is carried on i11 conjunction with the work in agri- culture. The boys, this year, made wagon boxes, self-feeders and single- rrees, repaired furniture, spliced rope, and did other work of that nature. The remaining number, however, held high hopes for the eoming year. Some twenty-tive reported to Coach Brown for praetiee, and from that time on, the process of rounding out the squad made steady progress. 'Phe season began with a defeat by Ft. Madison, but not without advantages to the losers, for this game gave the inexperieneed men many good pointers. 'l'he season progressed nicely until the team was hardened and eflieient. The last game was played against Milton on Thanksgiving llay. liloomiield had won from these opponents three sueeessive years, and seemed eapable ot' reeording another vietory. A snowy rain was falling, making it almost impossible for either team to make goal. llloomiield seored a goal in the tirst quarter and drop-kieked for the additional point. From then on it was just hard fighting on both sides. 'l'he game ended with a tinal score of seven to nothing in Bloom- iielul's favor. 'Phe season as a whole eould not be termed a failure, bet-.uuse of the training and enjoyment gained by the players. A. T. lirown, Uoaeh Brown proved to B. H. S, that he knew his work. Although the average made was not high, the team was a - strong one, eonsidering: the fact that most of the men were new to the game. Arthur was liked by all his men, and they hope that he is bark next season. 4Ulde'4'ovy t'l'4-te Coy eaptained the team through the past season. His battle ery was. Fight gang! Fight! -and he praetieed what he preaehed. Pete 4. was in every play that he eould pos- sibly get into. This makes his fourth year to reeeive a letter. Bloomfield has lost a haektield man and athlete who will be hard to replaee. islllil Xllll i w Fifty Alfred YVhite Pete White played the center posie tion. When the opponents had the hall, they soon found that it was use- less to try to gain anything through renter. They eould never get hy hini unless they walked over him, and he didn't allow that often. This is his seeond year to reeeive a B. Charles Craven Shorty was one of the fastest and shiftiest open Held runners in the haekfleld. Never say down, seemed to he his motto. 'l'his is his second year to receive a letter. Claude Porter Claude was alraekfield man. He was speedy, and had he had proper interference, he would have gone around end as if wearing the seven league boots. This is his ilrst year to win a letter. Carl Aslnnead AShlIlP21d was a recruit--like a good many of Bloon1f1eld's xnen this season. He played guard and he was very faithful in his practice. Dwight Rupe Dwight received a letter this year for the first time. He is a fearless and plucky end. LeRoy MeAv0y MeAvoy worked hard and deserves a great deal of credit as a football player. He won a letter in this his first season out for football and his fourth year in B. H. S. Robert Sturgis Bob was one of the most consistent and eonseientions football players that ever wore the maroon and gold. He had both weight and speed, and knew how to use thein to good advantage. He is a two-year letter nian. Martin Uruiksbank f'rnikshank played in the baekfleld and proved to be a ground grainer. His great strenfzth was his nrlin asset. 'l'his was his tlrst year on the grid- iron. Herman Horn Pete Horn is eaptain eleet for the f'0llllllf.5,' season. This was his flrst year to don football togs, but he punched the line like an old timer. Herbert Hill Herb won his position at taekle early in the season. Ile downed his nian when he hit him, for he hit like a pile driver. Fhester Porter Cher-ker played end. He was new to the game, but defied the opj ponents to try to eirele his end. lVonn Anderson Red won a position at guard this season. He is not heavy, in faet. he is light for a line man: but he is the kind who would rather be brought bark on his shield than go down to defeat. Fi ft yft me Football Banquet The boys of the '23 football squad gathered with several of their friends on February 4th, to enjoy the annual football banquet of B. H. S. The banquet was served by the Home Economics girls. The tables were beautifully decorated with candles, and in the center of each table was a small football and field. All took part in a very effective toast program. At the close of the banquet, Herman Horn was elected to lead the warriors of '24. Letters were then given to those who had played the required num- ber of quarters, Herbert Hilllbeing mentioned as the only one who had played all of the quarters. The boys reluctantly departed from so enjoyable an evening, feel- ing that a successful season had closed very pleasantly indeed. ' TOAST rRooRAM Toastmaster- Pete Horn l. The winner in each class was awarded a medal, the winning class received a pennant. This pennant was won by the Seniors. The local athletes went to Milton, May 17th, to compete with representatives from Milton and Pulaski. The B. H. S. lads VVOII the meet. It does I10f trade tl1e honey it has gathered and stored for things that have no value. It banks tl1e honey in the hive and withdraws it only as re- quired for sustenanee. The bee stores more honey than is required for food in order that it may not starve in the days when there are no blossoms. If the bee is swallowed by a sparrow or crushed by some care- less person's shoe, the honey that it llflS'Sf0I'Pfl helps the others that survive. The bee does not wait for the full bloom of summer to be- gin work. It begins work with the 4-oming of spring time. The blossoms of the plum, the peat-h and the apple, the linden and the hawthorne, the elm and maple, the wild tlowers of the woods, tl1e dandelion and the strawberry, the clover and the alfalfa fields, tl1e tlowers of the garden-all these yield the silver and gold for storage, and are no harmed by the welrome visit of the bee, when it calls tor the annual contributions. The idle dro-ne is driven out of the hive in disgraee. There is no plat-e tor the idler in the world of bees, nor in the world of men. The world supplies a thousand sourres ot wealth to those who have the industry to garner what nature provides.
