eorgani ed Bloom The l96O's was an era of transition in the United States. It was a time when the teenagers unsuccessfully searched for their own identity in society. Because young people were greeted with serious problems, such as Vietnam and increased racial tension, it was necessary for them to shed their carefree attitudes of the 5O's. This left the teenagers lost and alien- ated from the outside world, thus they turned to rebellion. To become indepen- dent of the Great Society, to shy away from the norm was their ultimate goal. American teenagers grew their hair long. Boys also grew beards and mustaches to further show their rebellion. Syles of Clothing deteriorated into anything goes. Clothing was wild, untidy and only completed when the peace sign was hung about the neck. American youths began to voice their opinions in political and social issues like never before. To have their opinions expressed and heard was vital to exemplify their nonconformity. The teen- agers of the era protested, both peaceful- ly and violently. Many Bloom students were also part of this movement. They became fixated with freedom, peace and love, and tried to relate these ideals to every facet of their lives. Luxq 5 The new eye patch fad, direct from Lon- don, is taking American teens by storm. ln the process, however, it's endangering the eyesight of millions of youngsters. While it's in to wear the decorative patches, adorned with pictures of your fa- vorite singing group or TV star, their pro- longed use can wreak real havoc with your vision. By all means, don't forsake your eye- glasses just to wear an eyepatch. You may be Mod, but you'll be in trouble, too-by jeop- ardizing your precious eyesight. -I963 Illinois State Medical Society . ,Mm

F h-I This school year students will be faced with new responsibilities and challenges. As in no previous years, the student body is divided on two campuses. Formerly, the school's spirit has been shown to be one of enthusiasm and unanim- ity at all social and academic affairs. Now the same enthusiasm should be shown, whether the event is at the school of the little Bloo- mites or at the junior-senior division. Phys- ically, the four classes are now divided but their spirit must remain united. Meeting challenges is nothing new to Bloo- mites, and with teamwork and concentrated effort, this challenge, too, can be met suc- cessfully. g There is no doubt that Bloom is bigger than ever before and that it will require unity and effort to make it the bestl Rebellion Rul .l. 1 . , j 4 J Broadcaster, I964 'O J ' Q i H Q 1 When it comes to negative feelings mll'l'0l'l about first hour gym, one can say it One hundred eighty-four eyes of hate, hasn't changed in decades. V .QA Y' Brotherhood-A Common Goal During the l96O's, rebellious teenagers were everywhere. However, Bloom stu- dents set aside a week of Brotherhood to unify the student body. An editorial by the editor of the l967 Broadcaster exemplifies the meaning of Brotherhood. Are you an American? Maybe you are DOI and you do not even realize it. lf you do not believe that all of us should be 'one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,' then you are not really an American-regardless of what might be written on your birth certificate. lt is a fact that when different groups of people work together for a common purpose, understanding and tolerance develops as prejudice disappears. Bloom is becoming a good example of this, when more than ever, people are attempting to iron out their differences and problems through the student council, and the newly established human relations council and the Advisory Board. lf Bloomites are learn- ing to work together for the good of the school, why can't we all, as Americans join together to work for the good of the nation?' Our course is simple. Those who advocate violence should be ignoredt they have no place in a growing nation. Those who truly desire brotherhood must be willing to achieve it. L
