Jive Through Bloom STUDENTS ROCK WITH THE FIF TIES The rockin 5O's are probably the most memorable in recent history. This was the generation for the greasers and teeny-bop- pers. Poodle skirts, saddle shoes, COOL leathers, and jeans were a common sight on the Bloom students. The teen agers then ap- peared to be a more unified body. They were extremely spirited in support of their various teams. On the weekends the thing was for everyone to meet at the Morgue for soda sipping and slow swaying. The Morgue could be found in the basement of the old Bloom school. It was a famous hang-out where you could find the man or woman of your dreams. School spirit was extremely high and all sports were successful in their winnings. Then as now, the most outstanding charac- teristic of the Bloom students cheering Tro- jan spirit that never breaks, be it victory or defeat. CHANGES AROUND BL OOM IN THE FIF TIES From the cafeteria: Before the new cafeteria was built in l956. one student expresses his opinion of the upcoming eatery. There are many people who will point with pride to the building that will soon occupy the land north of Bloom. This will be the site of the new cafeteria. The building will be equipped to facilitate the constantly increasing population of the city of Bloom. Students will no longer be forced to wait in long lines for a hot lunch. tables tightly packed together will be a thing of the past. From other areas: During the 50's there was also many changes around school with the new additions under construction. The track team was the first to get a new home with the fieldhouse being their new permanent quarters. The huge auditorium which held a capacity of l5OO came in handy when presenting assemblies in an orderly fashion. The new gyman- sium also provided P.E. students with more room to exercise their muscles. -l956 Broadcaster

Rock and Roll Students Mr. Steckel Returns After Marine Duty in Korea During the l95O's, Mr. Steckel did one year of duty with the Marines in Korea. The following is an interview with him upon his return to Bloom. Commenting on the situation in Korea, Mr. Steckel said, American teenagers do not realize how lucky they really are. Young Korean teenagers work under extremely adverse conditions, the filth, mud and stench of war. But, even though some of them do not know what they are fighting for, they still have great spirit and a high morale. I had the pleasure and the privilege of working with the English, Turks, Australians, Koreans, and Greeks, he said. All of them have a high morale. At the close of the interview, Mr. Steckel added smiling, Don't forget to tell them that there is nothing to worry about as long as the Marines are there. After expressing his thanks to the many students who wrote to him, the ex-captain disclosed that he soon hopes to have a display of his many souvenirs. Mr. Steckel agrees that Bloom is a better place to work than Korea. . fs wi .li

I. To act daily in accordance with the school motto, Service and Loyalty. 2. To support all school enterprises and organizations to the best of our abilities. 3. To practice good sportsmanship in work and play. 4. To follow the Golden rule in relation to students and teachers. 5. To work for the good of the whole stu- dent body and the good name of the school 6. To cultivate in ourselves and others a strong sense of right and wrong. 7. To conform to the rules of our school on all occassions in word or deed. The Annual, l953 Fifties Lingo Are you a solid Jackson who likes to give out with the double talk? You are? Well, this bit of nonsense might interest you then. The other day I was walking down the hall, and l overheard two slick chicks drooling over a hunk of man. The conversation went something like this. Yes, my big bruiser is plenty po- tent. . . he's hep, hep, hep, with heli- um and that's more than l can say for that jerk of all trades that you hang out with. Don't be too sure of yourself. Say, latch your lashes on that super- man coming down the hall. Then the bell rang and those guy- goony pigeons went to class to dream about their one and only. Broadcaster, I95l
