It's 6:00 o.m. on a cold October morn- ing, and the buzzer on my alarm clock goes off os if a three-alarm fire bell has been sounded in the bed- room. I accidentally knock the box of tissues off my night stand os I drowsily reach for the alarm clock. Somehow I manage to open my eyes, which feel os if the sandman hod given me a double dose during the night. It takes almost three minutes to pry them open! I might os well wait until 6:05 now; it doesn't moke any sense to get up at 6:03. Down goes the snooze alarm button os I look for two more precious minutes. It's amazing how alarm clocks ore never wrong,” I think os mine is going off—exactly at 6:05. This is it! Another day . . . another. . . however it goes. There must be a bet- ter way.” So I swing my legs over the side of the bed and force myself info a wobbling position. That's right; one foot in front of the other.” Amazingly, I make it to the bathroom without curl- ing into a dark corner of the hallway for a minute or two of heavenly bliss. Hopefully, a couple splashes of icy water will do the trick. I fill my hands with cold water and take direct aim for the middle of my face. Much better! Although I'm still not fully awoke, I stumble back to my bedroom and pull on my jeans and tee-shirt. All of a sud- den I find myself becoming conscious of the atmosphere around me when I realize there is a rumbling for orange juice coming from my stomach. I race down the staircase, nearly knocking over the coat rack at the bot- tom, and with a gulp of juice and a dry piece of toast in my hand, I run out the door and down the street trying to con- vince myself that even though there are still seven months, six days, and twelve-and-one-half hours until gradu- ation, some day this will all be worth it.
