Sophomores Begin to Drive On It! Drivers' Ed. Teachers: Take a Drive on the Wild Side! The following drivers' education teachers have agreed to share with the readers of the 1982 Annual their most memorable flirtations with that unappealing destination known as Accident City”. What follows is their truthful narrative. A srudenr was driving when she lost control of the car. The cor went inro rhe other lane, whereupon I had to break the hold of rhe student's hands and rake control. Everyone wos fine. —Mr. Bell While driving with o srudenr driver, a cor forced us off rhe road. We went over a curb, through weeds and finally sropped about six inches before o telephone pole. —Mr. Sloro While driving on Vollmer Road toward Governor's Highway, rhe student claimed rhe brake didn't work. I hit my brake, and we skidded to a stop after bumping rhe car ahead of us. No damage ro either car or students. —Mr. Neubauer The srudenr hit a large pothole. The end result wos a flor tire the student had ro change with rhe help of rhe other students in rhe cor. —Mr. Holt While driving north on Western Avenue approaching Vollmer Road on icy roads, we were going very slowly. The srudenr hit rhe brakes ro turn right on Vollmer, bur because of the ice, rhe brakes didn't catch, ond we ran inro a car. —Mr. Mason It wos o rainy day while we were driving down o srreer which hod been blocked off. To get around rhe area, we had ro go on rhe shoulder. The driver of rhe cor did not see rhe detour sign. I kept telling her ro slow down because this detour was coming up. Finally, I yelled: Hit rhe brake!” The girl went on rhe shoulder, ond she jerked rhe wheel ro get bock on rhe rood. The cor went inro o skid and faced three busses ond traffic before it skidded three rimes across rhe rood. The situation wos mode worse by rhe fact that rhe girl froze behind rhe wheel. I got control of the car, got it back on rhe right side of rrhe rood, ond we proceeded on our way. —Mrs. Leeper BUS RIDE by Ken Peters I do not like riding rhe bus. I do nor like it or oil. My first rime riding rhe bus was my last, I do recoil. I do nor know rhe proper word for rhe behavior that was displayed. It's nor in any diaionary I know, bur I ber ir's in Rogef's. I wirnessed a most amazing fear, something I rhoughr hard ro do; I sow three people in a seor rhar wos only built for two. I kind of rhoughr I'd be introduced ro rhe school I was ro orrend, bur insread I wos made aware of who likes whose friend.” And when ir was rime ro leave, I found ir hard ro do because you find ir hard ro leave a sear rhar’s adhered ro you. doesn't require a chauffeur. Occasion- ally some aspects of the social life in- terrupted classroom concerns. Classes, though, began to become somewhat more tolerable as more variety began to be added. Perhaps this year, more than any other, was the year of ups and downs—hysterical laughter one moment and tears the next. Injroduaion
