Social Studies relate past and present The primary goal of the Social Studies Department is to relate past and present in a wide range of different courses, both national and international in scope. These courses will give students knowledge and understanding of the United States and other nations. The student is met with an increasing appreciation of his heritage, an understanding of the development of history, and a foundation for the production of the future. Aids such as films, filmstrips, records, maps and charts all are techniques used in teaching the student. At the Frosh-Soph Division the use of team teaching in the required World Cultures course has become a vital technique in presenting lectures to students. All students are required to take American History before they graduate but there are many elective courses oiTered to the student. In many courses such as Global Geography, the student learns the geographic facts about international countries instead of historical facts. All Social Studies courses strive to give the student the fundamentals of citizenship and political awareness necessary to meet the challenges of life in our complex society. All juniors are required to take American History before graduating from Bloom. Karen Cogar points out the position of the Alamo and the scene of a bloody battle during Mexican border wars to Debra Alexander and Joseph Young. X Team teaching plays an important role in teaching techniques at the Freshman-Sophomore Division and here Mr. Leach, Mrs. Heard, and Mr. Lightell are shown giving a lecture to third hour World Culture students. Mr. Robert Lightell explains the geographic position, terrain and climactic zone of a small South American country to Henry Jones and Herminia Ordonez. 5.1 -V w s ,,,,,sl y Using the largest globe in the school, Mr. Charles Mies, student teacher, shows Jean Wallace and David Brownfield a large seaport located on the Black Sea in a Global Geography class.

Foreign language key to communication The Foreign Language Department offers five dif- ferent courses, all of which help to provide the key to communication. Through the study of Foreign lan- guages the student becomes aware of his cultural heritage and the structure of his own language. The Foreign Language Department sets rigorous standards for grammar comprehension and speech lluency. Each course also provides a sound background in the culture and history of the country concerned. To help the language student learn the language easily and quickly, there are many different methods that can be used by the teacher. Slides, films, maps, flash cards and tape recorders all help the student gain a greater knowledge of the language. At both the Frosh-Soph and Junior-Senior divisions there are well equipped lan- guage labs where pupils are aided in their comprehen- sion and pronunciation of the language through the use of earphones and language tapes. Last summer a few students from Mrs. Cullls Ital- ian classes spent four weeks studying at an Italian Uni- versity. Bea Becker, Inge Hoffman and Juergen Jackert, who were all born in or once lived in Germany, point out to their fellow students many ofthe major German cities and their locations. Renata Ahrendt, Willie Nixon and Dean Campbell use the tape re- corder in an exercise where they recite a Spanish Dialogue while Dr. Pelaez looks on. ,
