Social Studies relate past and present The primary goal of the Social Studies Department is to relate past and present in a wide range of different courses, both national and international in scope. These courses will give students knowledge and understanding of the United States and other nations. The student is met with an increasing appreciation of his heritage, an understanding of the development of history, and a foundation for the production of the future. Aids such as films, filmstrips, records, maps and charts all are techniques used in teaching the student. At the Frosh-Soph Division the use of team teaching in the required World Cultures course has become a vital technique in presenting lectures to students. All students are required to take American History before they graduate but there are many elective courses oiTered to the student. In many courses such as Global Geography, the student learns the geographic facts about international countries instead of historical facts. All Social Studies courses strive to give the student the fundamentals of citizenship and political awareness necessary to meet the challenges of life in our complex society. All juniors are required to take American History before graduating from Bloom. Karen Cogar points out the position of the Alamo and the scene of a bloody battle during Mexican border wars to Debra Alexander and Joseph Young. 'U' Mr. Joseph Wenzel explains the structure of the many columns used by the Romans in their architecture to students Sue Shane, Melvin Flowers and Bob Macki in Ancient and Medieval history. X if
