Mr. Bernt Laate Mr. Laate checks Paul Mergentha1er's progress as Jim Hahn continues his experiment during 1958-59 school year. Mr. Laate lectures one of his chemistry classes. IN MEMORIAM Bloom Community College suffered a tragic loss this year with the death of Mr. Bernt Laate. Mr Laate was one of the original staff members of the college, teaching Chemistry and Physical Science. He was, in Dr. Metcalf's words, a good man, friendly and affable, yet entirely professional in his approach to his subject and to his students. He was interested in improving his teaching, and during the past two summers had been awarded scholarships at Michigan State University through the National Science Foundation for advanced study. Mr. Laate was a native of Norway, and fought with the Norwegian Air Force during the early days of World War II. A naturalized citizen of the United States, he was vitally interested in national affairs, for he understood what freedom is, and what one loses when his nation is no longer free. Our sympathy and best wishes are tendered to Mrs. Laate and their two small children. We at Bloom Community College share in a real sense their loss.
