Blinn College basketball Coach Waldo lchau called a time out Tuesday night 'li about 30 seconds left after his Bucca- rs went down by one point to Alvin, 58, and he and the Bucs discussed a little tegy. The natural conclusion would be for inny Campbell to take the shot. He had 10 of 16 from the field, mostly from the tside, including Blinn's latest six points. Campbell got a chance after the ball was ' into play, but turned it down and moved ball back around to the left side of nas court. Freshman Jerry Lowe hardly seemed ly to take a shot, especially with 14 onds left in the game. He isn't even a ter and had scored only four points ing the game. But he got an opening and, from about feet away, touched nothing but the net the ball and gave Blinn a 60-59 win the visiting Dolphins. Dalchau didnlt really plan for Lowe to Fred Stevens take that final shot. Did he? l told them 1 wanted either him tlaowej or Campbell to take it,7' Dalchau said after the final buzzer. :jerry has a good shot. He can make the basketf, With 1.4 seconds left, Blinn certainly wasn't assured of the win, especially con- sidering the way Alvin ,s Roy Lloyd had been shooting the ball. Lloyd had hit 11 of 18 from thc field and four of four from the free throw line when the Dolphins set him up for a shot from the corner with five seconds left. But he missed that shot and teammate Bruce Kincaide got the rebound and put up a desperation shot that rolled to the floor as the buzzer ended the game. The final five minutes of the games saw no team take more than a one-point lead. The lead changed lfl. times during that period, after Alvinis Leonard lrlymes broke a 4-8-4-8 tie with a free throw. All of Blinn's points came from field goals. In fact, the Bucs attempted only two free throws and were never in the bonus l . John Williams Alvin 59 Blinn 60 situation since Alvin committed only seven fouls. Blinn was called on 15 fouls and Alvin hit nine of 11 free throws. Blinn was good on 30 of 55 shots from the field while Alvin hit 25 of 50. Lloyd led the game's scoring with 26 points, followed by Campbellis 20. Alvin controlled the early part of the game, taking as much as a seven point lead at one point before Blinn battled back late in the first half. The Bucs took a 26-25 lead with 15 seconds left, but Alvin's Thomas Battle sank a 25-footer with two seconds on the clock to give the Dolphins the halftime advantage. 231

78 San Jacinto 81 Blinn Tim Poison had been hot all night. The 6-5M sophomore center had already hit four consecutive free throws and was good on seven of nine attempts from the field. So when Blinn College basketball Coach ,. , :rg , t' if I 230 Waldo Dalchau had to pick someone to shoot two pressure technical free shots, Polson was the natural to go to the line. llc came through again with two shots, giving him four ,free throws in the last minute of play. And even though his last two wercn'l needed, they supplied Blinn with a little breathing room with three seconds left on the clock in their 81-78 win over visiting and highly respected San Jacinto College Monday night. The Bucs hardly missed a shot and finished the game shooting 54- percent from the field. Polson, Johnny Campbell and Winston Harrison, who collectively shot 65 percent from the floor, controlcd the Blinn offense. They scored 29 of Blinnis first half points and 26 in the second half. Campbell scored a quick field goal to give Blinn a 415-27 lead to open thc second half and then San Jac struck. The Ravens stuck Blinn with a full-court press that they held on the Bucs throughout the half, and the visitors scored 14 unanswered points to close the gap to 415-411 before Blinn scored again. Blinn finally settled down and worked L fpfif, 45 Tim Polson the ball more smoothly against the press worked for the open shots under its basket. The Bucs stretched their lead out to 12 points at 68-56, before the R staged another comeback, pulling to x one point at 75-74 and again at 79-78 only 22 seconds left to play. With 16 seconds left Blinnis top handler, Charles Mack, was called for c ing when he and a San Jae player col giving thc Ravens possession of the ball. San Jae worked the clock for a shot from Tobe Jackson, the game's le scorer. But he found Harrison blocking goal and in trying to elude him, ,lam stepped out of hounds with three ser left. But with San Jaeis tough press, Ravens still had a chance, since Blinn had throw the ball in under the San ,Iac b. But Raven Coach Ronnie Arrow and assistant both ran onto the court after call, were charged with a technical foul, ting Poison up for his two free throws. Making them and giving Blinn the ball mideourt gave the Bucs an assured win. Ronald Revis
