10 Navarro 6 Blinn As reigning Texas Junior College Foot- ball Conference champions, the Bulldogs opened the defense of their crown with a 245-yard rushing offense that overcame five turnovers with the help of four miscues from Blinn. Freddy Reed, with 63 yards on 18 carries, was the workhorse for the Bucs as they found most of their running room through the middle of the Navarro line. Quincy Whittington was limited to 31 yards on 12 carries and was never able to really get outside the Bulldog containment. He did find plenty of room through the center in the first quarter, enough to score the scason's first touchdown on a nine-yard jaunt, bouncing off a secondary back and falling over the goal line with 5 :32 left. Moving toward the Navarro goal, spurred by a 25-yard option keeper from Trussell, in at quarterback. The drive fizzled out at the five when Trussell was stopped on a keeper. Clay Nelson set up the final Blinn attempt when he recovered a fumble at the Navarro 25. On the first offensive play, center Joey Hancock sprained his ankle and had to leave the game. His back-up, Kenneth Janak, was l 1l .4 already hurt and Coach Ben Boehnke inserted tackle Rick Gann. Blinn paid for that though. On fourth- and-two, Clark bobbled the snap from Gann and was forced to run with the ball and was stopped after only one yard. Reed hurt a big toe before the game was over and, along with Hancock, Janak Arthur Zepeda, was on the Buc injury the next morning. Blinn also got an interception Kirk Summers and another fumble rect from Mark Lyons. if X-,gm '2f'whi ' 'N .- ,fungi gl ,..--- . '- W fif1fs5?F,1'ri1L.,'Ic4, Y w i. H .. - --ii M . .. i': 1:.' Trussell ran the Blinn offense through- t the game, passed for a touchdown, cked a 35-yard field goal and impressed oehnke during the Buccaneers' 31-6 win er the Henderson County Cardinals here in exas Junior College Football Conference ay Saturday night. It was his first start as a quarterback, having kicked and played second string even in high school. He backed up Greg Clark in Blinn's first game, but got the starting job Saturday after Clark had been injured in the Navarro game. Brent Parish, who started in place of injured fullback Freddy Reed, had the first score, from one yard out. The drive started 1, Henderson 6 Blinn 31 early when, after Blinn kicked off, Henderson County fumbled on the first play with Jim Jiral recovering at the 25. Trussell kicked the extra point and also had the next score with his 35-yard field goal. Baker's touchdown reception ended the first half scoring as Blinn took a 16-0 lead into the halftime break. Henderson County lit up its scoreboard in the third quarter after being held to a net four yards offense and one first down in the first half. Henderson County's Kenneth Newton took a pitch that was even bobbled by a Blinn player and somehow slipped through the defense to score from 35 yards out. The Blinn defense, playing superbly most of the night, got a bit of revenge on the Cardinals, next possession. Donnie Williams had returned Hender- son County's kickoff 53 yards to the Cards, 37 and Trussell punted from the 30 to the seven yard line. On athird-and-nine, Cardinal quarterback Justin Wilson dropped back to pass and found Greg Phillips all over him. With a little assist from Jiral, Wilson was dropped for a safety. Williams, a sophomore playing his first year of football for Blinn, had the final two scores from four and three yards out. vo a- 1 ll! i i A l ' 4 .111 i i ap.:-' 1 n ,dai fl, , 5 ., ' . , H. f 1. 14 - A' 'li 'bfi' fi 1 ,w if X iw vi lil. in , -- - ..,, ..
