Division of Humanities The English Department is concerned with helping the students to achieve a degree of proficiency in the process of thinking and in expressing the end product of thought in an effective and acceptable manner of either oral or written communication. Through courses in literature, the Department supplies facts essential to the intelligent reading of selections in literature, points out the characteristics which render each author significant in the development of literature and acquaints the student to work for himself by supplying fundamental facts related to the moral, social, political, and intellectual development. The DepartmentofHumanities-English, journalism, and Spanish-uses educational media to aid the teacher in teaching and to improve the learning of the student. The 16mm projector, overhead projector, record player, tape recorder, and filmstrip projector are used. ln English Composition 131, the stu- dents discover that English is more than i before e except after c. Students learn and relearn the basic things that make up the English language and learn to write a unified and coherent paper of five hundred words. After the students successfully complete English 131, they enroll in English 132, called Composition and Rhetoric. This course continues the study of the principles and techniques of writing and reading prose. Special emphasis is placed on writing a research paper by using the scientific method. The Department offers a special course, English 133, for the international students who need to establish a proficiency level in the English language. Besides the special course for the international students, the Department offers Developmental Reading. This course is to develop speed and com- prehension in reading. The students, during their second year of study, may take the Survey of English Literature courses, Technical Writing, andlor Introduction to Literature courses. The stu- dent's choice depends upon his major and his choice of senior college or university. Besides the English and literature courses, the journalism major may take the journalism courses and the publication courses. Another important required course for manymajors is Philosophy 231. This is an introductory course to the major area of 24 Wilfred O. Dietrich, Division Chairperson, English, Publications, Technical Writing philosophy-theories of knowledge, value, and reality. Philosophy 231, is an ethics course. The Department offers two courses in Second-year Spanish. Students must realize the benefits in learning the Spanish language, especially if they're interested in law, medi- cine, police, communication, teachers, and many other fields. Students can meet these requirements during their first two years of college. English Teachers Elect Officers At the business session of the Texas joint Council of Teachers of English District VI meeting, held at Navasota High School, Saturday, Sept. 24, the following officers for 1978 were elected: General co-chairman, Mary H. Cannon and johanna Hereford, from Navasota High School, program chairman, Wilfred O. Dietrich, Division Chairman of Humanities, Blinn Collegeg and also from Blinn, Mary Haley, English instructor, will serve as secretary-treasurer. Dietrich, chaired one of the workshops entitled, Reaction to Preparation for College English. On the panel were four college students. The two students from Blinn were Brenda Lou Voelkel and Paul David Premajon, and the two students from A 84 M University were Mala Farmer and Hamp Keaghey. The other workshops were Solutions to Elementary Reading, Logic for Living, Teaching the Novel, Teaching Compo- sition, and Double Speak: Awareness of Deceit. Besides Mrs. Haley and Mr. Dietrich, Blinn College was represented by Mrs. jane Diemer, Mrs. juanita Knight, Mrs. Sylvia Price and Dan Schiller. The Department of Humanities at Blinn will host next year's Texas joint Council of Teachers of English, Saturday, Sept. 23, 1978. jane Diemer, English

Accounting, Algebra, Calculus, Geometry, Trigonometry and others are offered. There are also courses offered for stu- dents majoring in special fields. Modern Mathematics I and ll are provided for Elementary Education majors.
