David Minielly a sophomore from Houston said, Steve had millions of friends, he never met a stranger. He kept things alive on the baseball team and always gave 100 per cent whether or not in pain. Steve celebrated his 21st birthday the Friday before he passed away. Two of the Blinn baseball players, Steve Lundy and David Minielly visited him in the hospital and took him his award sweater. Coach Haberman said, His Mom hung it up in his room, so everyone that came to visit knew Steve had played baseball. He knew he was sick and accepted it, and it was the way he handled the situation that made people love him even more. He enjoyed every day of his life, said Coach Haberman, and you would have never known he was terminally ill because he never complained. He was buried Monday, November 7 in Greenwood Memorial Park. Survivors included his parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles iHaml Tobler, a brother, Mark, and an endless amount of friends who attended the funeral. Whether or not you knew Steve, it is evident that those who did, will not forget him. lt is the many memories his friends and relatives hold that will linger on into time unknown. Easy going, a great guy, and well liked were the words most frequently used to describe former Blinn student Steve Tobler, who died of cancer, November 5, l977. Leroy Dreyer, head baseball coach and Athletic Director, said, Steve exemplified leadership and ability and always paid the price to win. Steve had good speed, good hands and a quick arm. Coach Dreyer said, We were depending on him a lot this year. He was an outstanding athlete who loved sports and never gave up, said Mr. Robert Haberman, Assistant baseball coach. Steve died of the disease no one has found a cure for yet, the disease Steve fought so hard to try and overcome. Coach Haberman said, He would jog during the summer to keep in shape and to try and fight the disease hoping it would go away. He was a strong athlete that built himself up until he made the team. Athletics was his whole life, and he was glad he had the chance to play college baseball even if it was for one year. Steve was from Huntsville where he attended Huntsville High School. He played football, baseball, and basketball during his years at Huntsville high. Some say he was the finest receiver in football the school has ever seen. 287
