22 Kilgore 20 Blinn The Blinn Buccaneers made a gallant come back in the fourth quarter but so did Kilgore and defeated the Bucs, 22-20. The Rangers managed to get a moderate lead in the first half by a score of 19-O. The three touchdowns came in the second period by freshmen Michael Wright and David Scott. The first touchdown was a 57 yard run with the point after no good. The second one was a one yard drive on fourth down and one. The kick was good. With 3:14 left in the third quarter Kilgore quarterback Ricky Hardin threw a six yard pass to David Scott for the third touchdown. The point after was no good, This ended all first half action. The Bucs came into the fourth quarter fired up and ready to score. With 10:13 left to go Buccaneer quarterback Larry Thompson made a five yard run scoring the first touchdown of the night. The point after was blocked. Blinn's second touchdown was set up by a 66 yard pass from Thompson to Sopho- BLINN. i Kalum Haack LB Hempstead 222 more lrving Erb. With 1:26 left in the period, Leroy King went in for six more from the one yard line. The Bucs went for two but failed, only by inches. Thompson once again connected with Erb on a 34 yard pass and a43 yarder to freshman Mitch Renfro to put the Bucs in scoring position. Leroy King then took a one yard dive into the end zone. The Buccaneers went for two with King the ball carrierg scored. This put Blinn on top 19-20. The game was just about over Kilgore had the ball. The Bucs were cal for a pass interference and Kilgore t advantage of the penalty and scored on a yard field goal by sophomore Mike Mene This ended the game with the Rangers top 22-20. BLINN l A. 1. The Bucs lost their first road trip of the ason Saturday night to the Tyler Apaches, -23. The two key touchdowns came in the cond and third quarter by All-American eroy King. Quarterback Larry Thompson opened second period firing a 27 yard pass to an Rick Gage. The Bucs stalled in the possessions and were forced to punt. After the Tyler offense unsuccessfully tried to move the pigskin, they were forced to give up the ball and the Bucs were once again in control. With the ball on Blinn's eight yard line, quarterback Larry Thompson passed to Leroy King who then bolted 92 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. Center Brad Roll and End Ben Barley were key blocks for Leroy. The extra point was good and the Bucs were on the board. As time ran out the Buccaneers ended the first half 16-7. ,, ! Blinn received the kick and in their first possession moved the balI'74 yards in a fourteen play drive. Leroy King went over the center from the two yard line to score. The point after was good and the score was then 16-14. The last touchdown of the game came when Tyler quarterback Larry Haynes took a dive into the end zone from the one yard line. Apache Curtis Pittman kicked the extra point bringing the final score of the period 23-14. The final period of the game was an offensive stalemate with both teams ex- changing punts. With 8:01 left in the quarter Blinn fumbled on their own 45, the Apaches recovered it but were unable to score. Some of the individual stats were Quincy Whittington 23 carries for 97 yards, Leroy King 14 carries for 37 yards, Larry Thompson 11 carries for 29 yards, and Fredd Reed one carr for five ards. The powerful Blinn offensive machine th Leroy King rolled over the Wharton neers by the score of 26 to 7 in the 1977 rine Bowl. The Buccaneers gained 534 total yards the game and showed the domination to by taking the opening kickoff 80 yards a score. The drive was highlighted by King's 27 yard run and by Larry Thompson's 25 yard completion to Mitch Renfro. With 10:54 to go in the opening quarter, King stomped in for a TD. The point after by Bob Mason put the Bucs up by the score of 7 to O. King scored again before changing ends of the field on a nine- yarder. The PAT failed, leaving a 13-O margin. Quarterback Larry Thompson con- -MW' Y lil- if 1341. mi .A l Wharton 7 Blinn 26 nected with wingback Irvin Erb on a 47-yard touchdown strike in the third period with Allen Davis adding the one-pointer. Wharton quarterback Steve 'Grantham connected with Raymond Butler for Wharton's only score from 72 yards out. The PAT left a 20-7 margin entering the final period. Buc freshman Quincy Whittington closed out the scoring on a one-yard run, part of his 78 totaled yards, in the fourth quarter. Pulling Thompson's passes from the air were Irvin Erb with two catches for 62 yards and the TD. Mitch Renfro had three snares for 65 yards and Mac Lingo one for 16. One of the climaxes of the night was the annoucement of the Most Valuable Players. The offensive star was Blinn's Leroy King, who gained 181 yards in 23 carries.
