20 Henderson 36 Blinn Looking back at the 865 yards gained by both Blinn College and Henderson Co., what opened the way for Blinn's 36-20 win over the Cardinals must have been a partic- ular three-yard loss. With 3:12 left in the third quarter, Blinn's Buccaneers had broken a 14-14 dead- lock with a 57-yard touchdown run by fresh- man Quincy Whittington and Allen Davis' extra point kick had stretched it to a 21-14 margin. Kalum Haack kicked off to the four, where Ethan Ogletree pulled it in but let a knee touch the ground. lt was the Cardinal's ball, from the four. After a net gain of one yard in three plays, Henderson Co. punter Larry Lovett dropped back to the end of his end zone to kick. He muffed the snap, let the ball hit the turf, picked it up and ran. But he ran about two yards too far because he just passed the goal line when Bucs Charlie Hodde, joe Smitherman and Norman Kiecke met him at the two. , 'fl' A A W 2 i.'l J-- 1 -Kurt Collins DB San Antonio 220 Instead of the two-point safety, the Bucs one play later cashed in on six points from All-America running back Leroy King. In a minute and a half of football, the Cardinals went from a tied score with the ball on the Blinn end of the field to a 27-14 deicit. The Bucs stretched the lead to a 33-14 margin when Whittington again got loose, this time for 35 yards and his second collegiate score. The 175-pounder ran a counter over the left side of the line, four large hole and bolted into the end Zone touched. Bob Mason rounded out the scoring the Bucs with a 42-yard field goal with 4 left in the game. His kickoff began the C on the only sustained drive of the conl one of 89 yards in 13 plays. The Blinn Buccaneers made a valiant me back in the fourth quarter, but arro pulled a come back of their own, defeated the Bucs 22-19, Thursday night pencer Field. Navarro received the kickoff in the ning minutes of the game and were Iled by the Buc defense. They punted to Blinn 45 where Blinn immediately rted the first drive of 1977. loe Smitherman, was forced to punt. Navarro took over with the ball and were stalled by the Buccaneer defense. Navarro punted to the Blinn 25 yard line. On the first play of the drive a Watts fumble put the Bulldogs only 25 yards from paydirt. Brenhamites were down 7-0. ln the second quarter the game became an offensive stalemate. Drives by Navarro were repeatedly stalled by fumbles. Consecutive fumbles were recovered by freshman Norman Kiecke 22 Navarro 19 Blinn and sophomore Ray Madden. After receiving the opening kickoff of the second half Blinn started to get back into the game. On second down Leroy King burst 39 yards into Navarro territory. His ramble went to waste as the drive stalled and Smitherman had to punt. The rest of the third quarter was knock down drag out defensive struggle. Sophomore Kirk Collins returned for a 78 yard touchdown with a spectacular run. Davis's split the uprights and the Bucs were on top 19-15. After receiving the kickoff Navarro was led back by an eight yard TD by Russell. With less than a minute left the Blinn desperation attempt was halted and Navarro won. Individual stats were for Blinn in rushing with Leroy King collecting 90 yards in twenty carries. In kicking joe Smitherman had eight punts for a 37 yard average. The Bucs lost their first road trip of the ason Saturday night to the Tyler Apaches, -23. The two key touchdowns came in the cond and third quarter by All-American eroy King. Quarterback Larry Thompson opened second period firing a 27 yard pass to an Rick Gage. The Bucs stalled in the possessions and were forced to punt. After the Tyler offense unsuccessfully tried to move the pigskin, they were forced to give up the ball and the Bucs were once again in control. With the ball on Blinn's eight yard line, quarterback Larry Thompson passed to Leroy King who then bolted 92 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. Center Brad Roll and End Ben Barley were key blocks for Leroy. The extra point was good and the Bucs were on the board. As time ran out the Buccaneers ended the first half 16-7. ,, ! Blinn received the kick and in their first possession moved the balI'74 yards in a fourteen play drive. Leroy King went over the center from the two yard line to score. The point after was good and the score was then 16-14. The last touchdown of the game came when Tyler quarterback Larry Haynes took a dive into the end zone from the one yard line. Apache Curtis Pittman kicked the extra point bringing the final score of the period 23-14. The final period of the game was an offensive stalemate with both teams ex- changing punts. With 8:01 left in the quarter Blinn fumbled on their own 45, the Apaches recovered it but were unable to score. Some of the individual stats were Quincy Whittington 23 carries for 97 yards, Leroy King 14 carries for 37 yards, Larry Thompson 11 carries for 29 yards, and Fredd Reed one carr for five ards.
