Blinn College- Ninety-Five Years of Progressive Education The primary purpose of Blinn College is to serve the educational needs of the people. Students are admitted without regard to race, color, or national origin. Under the name of Mission Institute, Blinn College was founded on March 28, 1883. The Southern Conference of the Methodist denomination maintained the institution for fifty years. ln 1887, Main Hall was given by Reverend Christian Blinn of New York who had donated a considerable sum of money for its con- struction. In 1889, the name was changed to Blinn Memorial. Old Main was then erected in 1906. ln order to meet the demands of the public, academic courses were added. After operating as an insti- tution for men only, Blinn College was made co-educational in 1927 under the actions of the leadership of President Philip Deschner. ln 1930 the school was merged with Southwestern. In 1934, a new charter was procured by the citizens of Brenham, and a private non-sectarian junior college, under the name of Blinn College, was organized with nine regents as the board of control. In February 1937, all connection with Southwestern University was severed. An election held in Washington County on june 8, 1937, for the purposes of creating a junior college district and for levying a small tax, was successful. Blinn thus became the first county district iunior college in Texas. In 1950, the voters of Washington County increased the tax levy and voted a bond issue for needed buildings and per- manent improvements. In 1961, the tax levy was increased in order to build an administration-science building. Since 1961, many other buildings have been added to the campus. Among these are the W. L. Moody, jr. Library, the Academic Building, the Theater-in- the-Round. The W. L. Moody Library was completed and occupied in january 1969. A new device was added to the Library this fall. A book detector was placed in the entrance of the Library for strict security measures. Next the Academic Building was 2 completed in 1974, and houses class- rooms and offices for the English, Math, Foreign Language, and Business Depart- ments. A Theatre-in-the-Round was the most recent building, completed in 1977. This Performing Arts Building seats 280 people and includes a 24 diameter foot stage, a control room, and dressing and prop rooms. A historical plaque was placed on Old Main in 1965 by the Washington County Historical Committee which records the history of Blinn College. The recorded Texas historic landmark signifies Old Main's place in history, which is visited by many people each year. The Blinn College campus consists of about sixty acres of land on which there are 40 buildings and two athletic fields. However, more improvements, such as the addition onto the Industrial Arts Building and the construction of two new tennis courts, make the campus ever growing and changing. Blinn College is approved and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Association of Texas Colleges and the University System. Courses offered by Blinn College transferable to senior colleges and universities, and careful Counseling and planning are offered by the college to ensure the student objec- tives. Blinn is also a member of the Texas junior College Athletic Conference and the Texas junior College Football Feder- ation and takes part in annual inter- collegiate sports. The 1977 Fall Semester at Blinn College included different students from different cities, states, and countries. Students for as far away as Iran come to Blinn. Other foreign countries repre- sented by students include: Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela, jordan, Mexico, Honduras, Bahrein, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Lebanon, El Salvador, San Salvador, Israel, Peru, Dominican Republic, Kenya, Hong Kong, Colombia, Bangladesh, Syria, and Surinam. Some 217 foreign students attend Blinn College in Brenham. Commuters also make up the stu- dent body at Blinn. They come from surrounding cities and from various parts of the state. Also many states have repre- sentatives at Blinn. For relaxation many students seek the Somerville Reservoir area, twelve miles northwest of Brenham. There is also a Student Center which houses a snack bar, pool tables, the post office, a tele- vision, various meeting rooms, offices for the Dean and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and the bookstore.
