Football Season - A Middling Year There was no championship in the Buccaneer camp in 1966. From the very beginning, harassed by repeated hard luck, Coach Leroy Dreyerls charges found the gang rough at every outing -with two notable exceptions when the battling Bucs rolled up impressive scores against an overpowered opposition. But when the year was over and we looked back at what had been the football season, it was not a bad campaign. When the dust had cleared, three BucseBruce Webb, Richard Garza, and Raymond Hickl-had gained All-Conference honors. The Blue and White had tangled with several of the nations toughest junior college teams and no one retired without wounds. We gave them all a battle. The team members will long remember the many practices and the numerous problems that they faced 0n the football field. 16 35 12 Season Record Wharton Arlington Tyler N avarro Henderson Kilgore Cisco Ranger Wharton Back Row: Leroy Dreyer, Head Coach; Ben Boehnke, Line Coach; Mike Gamblin; Johnny Schneider; Mike Hilliard; James Alexl ander; Ray Speir; Eddie Bazan; Ernie Stewart, End Coach. A Slow Start The Bucs dropped the season opener to Wharton 20 to 7. The season was young as were many of the starters. It was late in the third quarter before Blinn started moving, and Whar- ton had already begun to build up a bed of steam. Mike Hilliard passed to Wayne Williams to put Blinn College ahead by a score of 7 to 6, but the Pioneers came right back With the winning tally. Hilliard, trying des- perately to get back into the game, had a pass in- tercepted. Wharton turned this into a score as the clock was running out. The Bucs, being good sportsmen, accepted this defeat as a lesson of ex- perience. r r WI'WT Ler 1' Hllr'xl'lfm; Iv. 'W . . hwssht ,quw NWN, Thu! h f K: wt $3711?
