Without complaining you have guided us through thick and thin, often leaving your own work to do so. A class could never ask for a more patient and understanding sponsor, and now we realize how lucky we have been to have had you as such. A note of appreciation is not all that you deserve, but call it gratitude, appreciation or something else, we want you to know that it comes from the bottom of our hearts. We also thank the men and women of Benld and the surrounding areas for their support of our class projects. They have cooperated willingly and we are sincerely grateful. We expecially thank Mr. Albert Bertagnolli for his help in making our Junior-Senior Banquet a success. We are also grateful to the '53-'54, and '55 Memories Editors and their staffs for pre- serving for us some pleasant memories of our first three years in high school. We hope our fellow students enjoy our volume as much as we have theirs. MARJORIE M. TURCOL - '53 SHELBY BRODERICK - '54 ROSEMARIE VERNETTI - '55 Our Coronations For two years in succession our class has sponsored the Coronation of the Valentine Queen. Our 1955 Sweetheart was Miss Rosemarie Vemetti escorted by Daryl Butcher, and our 1956 Queen was Jo Ann Senak who was escorted by Howard Curtis and crowned by Richard Econie. Her court included the crown bearer Karen Tiburzi and Jimmy Slapak, and the following girls and their escorts: Evelyn Bravin and Don Obertino, Elaine Spudich and Bart Bertolino, Carol Enrico and Jack Marcacci, Verna Fritz and Eddie Beluin, Gloria Culver and John Gay, Mary Lou Cavallo and John Granger and Sandra Libbra and James Sabat. More pictures of Jo Ann's court appear in the Activities Section on pages 64 and 65. Senior History September 3, 1952, was our big day. Feeling somewhat foolish, we thirty-two Freshies marched up to the stage in our glad rags and received our beanies and diplomas. Before the effect of this initiation had worn off, the girls were ini- tiated into the GAA and again were required to wear outlandish costumes. Under the guidance of Mrs. De- nutte we held our first class meet- ing and elected Jack as President, Anton as Vice President, Shirley as Secretary-Treasurer, and Amanda and Billy to the Student Council. Evelyn represented our class on the Memories staff. We were very proud of our boys who did well in sports. Including the student manager, fifteen boys went out for football and ten for basketball. Jack, Wesley, and Howard received letters in football, Jack in basketball, and Ted in track. The girls did well in bowling, and Jackie, Amanda, Patsy, and Judy were junior cheerleaders. Jackie was our candidate for Rotary Queen and placed second. Jo Ann escorted by Anton and Amanda escorted by Jim Basso were members of the Valentine Queen's court. The girls entertained the assembly and the PTA with a one act play entitled Murderer at Large. Thirteen of our members played in the band, and several entered speech contests and participated in the Minstrel show sponsored by the chorus. We closed our Freshman year with a picnic at the Staunton Country Club. In September we returned to Benld's institution of higher education with a new member, Delores Dunwick. Our first class meeting was under the guidance of Mr. Henry Marcacci who has remained our sponsor. We chose Ted for our President, Anton, Vice President, and Betty Jo, Secretary-Treasurer. Don A. took Billy's place on the Student Council and served as a member of the newly formed Student Court. Shirley was our member on the Annual Staff. Again we were proud of our boys who did well in athletics. Five players and one manager went out for football, and Jack, Wesley, Howard, and Richard received letters. Jack again made the first basketball team and received his letter. Richard received a track letter. Betty Jo joined Jackie, Judy, Pat, and Amanda as varsity cheerleaders. Cyrelda and Carole were on the State Bowling team and with Evelyn, Shirley, Lyn and Jo Ann won the yearly trophy. Ten were still in band and several entered speech contests. Carole was our candidate for Rotary Queen and placed second. Patsy escorted by Anton and Kathleen escorted by Howard were members of the Valentine Queen's court. Our big activity of the year was our class play, No More Homework. The play, by the combined efforts of all the sophomores, Mr. Makuh, our director, and Mr. Marcacci, our sponsor, was a success. The next week, too, was an important one for some of our members, because they either served or entertained at the Junior-Senior Banquet. We closed our Sophomore year with a going-away party for J. Bellovich and Delores D. at the Staunton Country Club and with a swimming party at Hillsboro. That summer Shirley, Cyrelda and Amanda went to GAA camp, and Richard E. went to Boys’ State. We started our Junior year with four members less - Jim B., Delores, Ted and Amanda. Alice L. left later on in the year. Amanda and Richard helped with the initiation program. At our first meeting Howard was elected President, John S., Vice President, and Jo Ann, Secretary-Treasurer. Cyrelda took Amanda's place and Bill Don’s on the Student Council. Evelyn again served on Memories’ Staff. We were active in athletics again. Five boys were out for football and Jack, Wesley, Howard and Richard earned letters. Jack and Wesley received letters in basketball. John, Don and Anton also played. Richard earned a track letter. Cyrelda, Lyn and Jo Ann were GAA officers and Jackie, Judy, Pat and Betty were cheerleaders. Eight members were still in band and twelve made the chorus. Our first money-making” scheme that year was the sale of Curtis magazines. This amounted to $1417.45 and gave us a profit of $474.57. Jack and Lyn served as captains and Theresa as sales manager. Betty Jo and Anton were the two highest salesmen. Lyn escorted by Dominic Ingrando was a member of the Rotary Queen’s court and upheld our standard by placing second. On December 22 we gave the Christmas dance. In February we crowned R. M. Vernetti the Sweetheart of Benld High at the Valentine Dance. Our own candidates were Betty Jo escorted by John S. and Theresa escorted by Jim Basso. We received our class rings in March. In May we gave the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our theme, a French one, won the approval of the students and teachers. The next week we helped the Commercial Club with their carnival. Our last class function of the year was a class picnic at Hillsboro Lake. During the summer Eugene, Dominic and Wesley attended conservation camp, Betty Jo, Girls’ State and Jackie the Cheerleading School. And now as worldly seniors, we face this, our last year, with a mixture of anticipation and excitement. The year’s activities will be recorded throughout the rest of the book. G. A. A. INITIATION--! PICNICS CARNIVAL.- -3 Junior-Senior Banquet The 1955 Junior-Senior Banquet was held Saturday evening, May 14th. The theme for the occasion was An Evening in Paris and the gymnasium was transformed into a French Cafe. The predominating colors were blue, silver and red, the national colors of France. Checkered tablecloths and wine bottle candles completed the scene. The striking peasant costumes of the girls, the chef costumes of the boys, mood music and other French entertainment added to the gayety of the surroundings. The food was prepared by the mothers of the Juniors and served by members of the Sophomore class. PROGRAMME MENU Invocation....................Mr. W. J. Football Summary The Indians had a more successful football season this year as they tied for second place in the South Central Conference. They emerged with a season record of 2 wins, 3 ties, and 4 losses. Having been elected last spring, Richard Econie served as captain and was assisted by Howard Curtis. These two and Jack Plovich, Wesley Cherry, and James Ferrero will be leaving this year; but with Moody, Bertolino, Grandone, Hedrick, De Martini, Rossio, Gay, and Marcacci forming the basic structure and supplanted by other squad members and the incoming Freshmen, we should have another good team and produce some rough competition for any and all opponents. We Seniors wish them the best of luck. HOME GAMES AWAY GAMES October 7 Benld 0 Roxana 21 September 16 Benld 0 Pana 31 21 Benld 8 Carlinville 6 23 Benld 20 Greenfield 0 November 4 Benld 6 W. M. We also had four of our Senior gridmen on the All Conference team. Jack Plovich and Wesley Cherry were selected for the backfield and Richard Econie and Howard Curtis as tackles. Basketball Summary The 1955-1956 basketball season was one of ups and downs for the Benld Indians. However, with the nucleus of three returning lettermen - Ron Moody, Bart Bertolino, and Joe Gay - accom- panied by the other promising members of the squad and the incoming Freshmen, we have a very bright outlook for the future. You have unselfishly sacrificed so much for our benefit-providing us opportunities and things that you never had. You have done much to make oureducation possible. Your patience is listening to our problems, your consolation given us in trying times or moments of disappointment, and the jubi- lance shared in our moments of triumph have meant much to us. We realize we can neverfully repay you for all your efforts, love, guidance, understanding, and coopera- tion, but we hope to partly repay you by making our lives worthwhile. May we be wise enough to look to you in the future, remembering how you have helped us in the past. It is only fitting and proper that we dedicate this book to you.
