ROCKET REVIEW presents BLAND HIGH SCHOOL through THE ECHO Volume 36 1981 Bland High School Bland, Virginia 24315 Bland High School is situated on the Walker’s Creek and Holston Turnpike, approximately one- fourth mile south of the Bland County Courthouse. It is bounded on the south by Walker’s Big Mountain and on the north by Brushy Mountain. The area is basically rural, with the majority of its population being landowners of inheritance with a strong sense of independence and self- sufficiency. With the completion of Interstate 77 which bisects the county, Bland has grown steadily year by year. However, heritage still plays a big part in Bland County. Thanks to the guidance of Bland County parents and teachers, Bland High School students are brought up in an atmosphere of loyalty to their school and patriotism toward their country. Perhaps this is why Bland alumni excel in their chosen fields. As well as an abundance of clear, free-running creeks and lush, green meadows, Bland boasts a high school student body that is capable of win- ning state basketball championships and rating first in the state on competency tests—not a bad record for a group A school! The class collecting the most was Mrs. Bailey’s first grade and they were honored with entertainment and refreshments by the FBLA. Who’s the fairest of them all? Students and faculty chose Tammy Cline as their Sweetheart Queen on February 6, 1981, with second and third places going to Sharon Simmons and Lora Groseclose. Seniors can well remember their transitional “trial and error’ eighth grade year. Curiosity, confu- sion, and compulsion seemed ever present. As the years passed, however, maturity prevailed in the form of close friendship ties and steadfast loyalty to their Alma Mater—Bland High! Having attended Bland schools for 12 years, seniors will be well prepared to venture into the working world and take their places as loyal supporters of their community called Bland.
