Hardy and Mrs. Elizabeth G. Newberry. We shall remember and appreciate their contributions to our educational training. Mrs. Helen P. Hardy retired on May of 1977 af- ter 35 years of teaching in her native county. Mrs. Hardy graduated from Radford College with a B.S. degree in Math and French. Her first year of teaching was spent at Ceres High School. The next year Mrs. Hardy came to Bland High School where she spent the remainder of her teaching career. In addition to her teaching duties, Mrs. Hardy sponsored numerous classes and clubs. At one point in her career Mrs. Hardy coached girls’ basketball. The highlights of Mrs. Hardy’s con- tributions to the students of Bland High School was her role as sponsor of The Echo. Mrs. Hardy sponsored the yearbook from 1951 through 1977. Mrs. Hardy was the first sponsor of the class of 1980. She sponsored the class from 1974 to 1977. Mrs. Elizabeth G. Newberry graduated from Pearisburg High School in 1953. She attended Radford College where she obtained a B.S. in Business Education in 1957 and an M.S. in Education in 1972. She and her husband. William, have two children, Theron, 18, and Dawn, 15. Her hobbies include reading, music, crafts, and painting. Mrs. Newberry was co-sponsor of The Echo in 1977, and upon the retirement of Mrs. Hardy in 1978, accepted full sponsorship of The Echo. It is the end of winter and the woods around our country are in full bloom. The joy of summer is bursting in every flower blossom and every warm raindrop. This is both a sad and a happy time. The coaches and athletes have breathed a sigh of relief as the last glove and ball is stored carefully in its place. The mem- bers of each organization have cleaned out their files and collected the last of their dues, and our advertisers have started their summer sales. Our school is only a hollow shell. Classrooms sit vacant and silent, blackboards stay clean, trash cans remain empty. The hallways echo with only memories now; memories of good and bad limes, smiles and tears, beginnings and ends. The Graduating Class of 1980 has said fond goodbyes to our school. They are going out into a vast new unexplored region of life. Adulthood. They don't know what the future holds for them. This marks the end of security and comfortable routine. They know that they must face reality and the aspect is somewhat frightening. They are leaving their friends and families and going out to begin a new life, a new routine. At this moment, their only connection with the past is a piece of paper, a paper representing their freedom from childhood. For the Seniors this is the closing of the door to the high school and the opening of the door to college or marriage or a job and most definitely to responsibility. They know this is a precious moment, a beginning and an end. but they also know that they are prepared for it. For the underclassmen, it's just another summer. Juniors will try to fill the vacant place left by the seniors; and there will be another bunch of short, giggly, pushy eighth graders. This is the beginning of a new decade, the 1980's, and mankind is pushing ahead, searching for a new meaning to life. A feeling of contentment settles on our country, for beginnings and ends will continue forever. Closing III Index Ads — 88-109 Atwell.
