DEDICATION The members of the Class of '77 feel that our high school journey has been one of excellence and achievement. Without the help of two very de- voted people, we would have never completed our journey. Our sponsors, Mrs. Elizabeth G. Newberry and Mr. A. Jack King, have guided us along the rocky path of high school. In sincere appreciation, we dedicate this 1977 edition of THE ECHO to Mrs. Newberry and Mr. King, for, although class sponsors may be many, real friends are hard to find. Mrs. Elizabeth G. Newberry Mrs. Elizabeth Newberry graduated from Pearis- burg High School in 1953. She attended Radford College where she obtained a B.S. in Business Education in 1957 and a M.S. in Education in 1972. She and her husband, William, have two children, Theron, 14, and Dawn, 12. In her spare time, Mrs. Newberry enjoys reading, music, crafts, and painting. She has sponsored the Class of '77 since 1972 and has a close personal relationship with class members. Mr. A. Jack King is an alumnus of Bland High School. He graduated from BHS in 1955. After living it up for a year, Mr. King decided to attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he received his B.S. in Agricultural Education. He taught at Sugar Grove for two years. In 1962, he came to BHS where he has taught since. Mr. King is mar- ried to the former Rhonda Bryant, and has two daughters Vicie, 15, and Missy May, 19 mo. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and attending VPI sports events. 4 Mr. A. Jack King and Missy May Mr. King helps with selling drinks. MRS. HARDY RETIRES AFTER 35 YEARS In May of 1977, Mrs. Helen P. Hardy will retire after thirty-five years of teaching in her native county. Mrs. Hardy graduated from Radford College with a B.S. degree in Mathematics and French. Her first year of teaching was spent at Ceres High School. The next year Mrs. Hardy came to BHS where she spent the remainder of her teaching career. In addftion to her teaching duties, Mrs. Hardy has sponsored numerous classes and clubs. At one point in her career Mrs. Hardy coached girls' basketball. The highlight of Mrs. Hardy's contributions to the students of BHS has been her role as sponsor of The Echo. Mrs. Hardy has sponsored the yearbook since 1951. No one can deny that Mrs. Hardy will be sorely missed. She is living proof that alot of work can be done in 35 years. Mrs. Helen P. Hardy is leaving BHS after thirty- five years of teaching. Mrs. Hardy ... in the 1950's Mrs. Hardy ... in the 1960's Mrs. Hardy ... in the 1970's 6 Mrs. Hardy has sponsored the school yearbook, The Echo, since 1951. Pictured above are the annuals that she has helped to publish. Two familiar sights around BHS: Mrs. Hardy and The Echo The teacher we all loved so well. Who taught us Math and French translation, From eighth grade on through graduation, She nurtured our young education. 7 MISS ECHO DAY Miss Echo 1977 Debbie Newberry A dance and program were held on September 17, 1976, to honor Miss Echo '77, Debbie Newberry.
