Bland County was formed in 1861 from Wythe, Tazewell, and Giles Counties and named for Richard Bland, a leader in the Revolutionary War. The original Courthouse, which was built in 1874, burned in 1888. A new structure was built in 1889. The por- tico in existence today was installed in 1929. An addition to the Court- house was completed in 1949. V0CUMS31 CymA s. MUMV...............SDJZOR MRS. MSCSNP- HARDy........SPONSOR Men of genius do not excel in any pro- fession because they labour in it, but they labour in it because they excel. —Hazlitt ■DS'DJCA We, the Senior Class of '76 dedicate the 31st edition of The Echo to two outstand- ing and faithful sponsors, Mrs. Sandy F. Tarter and Mr. Fred L. Beamer. Their selflessness and hard work have led us up the rough road of knowledge to the destiny we have long been seeking. 2 3 RSZmSMStfZ Mr. J. M. Thomas, after thirty-seven years of teaching, plans to retire at the end of this year. He graduated from King College where he received his A. B. Degree. Later, he attended Radford College for certification in Library Science. At V. P. I. G S. U. he earned his Master's De- gree in Education. In the field of education he served as principal of Ceres High School and science teacher, li- brarian, and guidance counselor at Bland High School. Mr. Thomas served in World War II as a photographer. His hobbies are philately, numismatics, rock hunting, lepidopterology, and photography. Bland High School wishes to extend to Mr. Thomas a long and happy retirement. Mr. J. M. Thomas The teachers and aides of Bland Combined Schools honored Mr. R. Dow Davis and Mrs. Lois O. Crabtree in a Retirement Luncheon in Wytheville, June 1975. Pictured are Mr. Davis and Mrs. Crabtree with the Superintendent of Bland County Schools, Mr. Victor R. Gilly. Lynda Muncy Editor-in-chief ZMSCHOSZAn In 1936 a group of teachers and students designed and published the first yearbook of Bland High School. It was named The Echo. The yearbook was not published during the war because of a paper shortage. The next edition of The Echo was published in 1946 with Mrs. Ruth B. Kegley acting as sponsor until 1950. During each year since then, Mrs. Helen P. Hardy has sponsored The Echo. During the Bicentennial it is ap- propriate that The Echo should take its place in history. The Echo has provided a history of our school and a source of reference for all. 10 Mrs. Helen Hardy Sponsor Sarah Miller, Assistant Editor; Lynda Muncy, Editor.
