Advertisements Dedication The class of 1973 dedicates The Echo to those, who through their patience, kindness, and understanding guided our footsteps at the beginning of the long jour- ney to becoming Seniors. With gratitude and sincere thanks we find it an honor to dedicate our annual to Miss Mary Greever and Mr. Richard Havens. 3 Senior Class 1973 SCA Officers 4 Bland High Seal 5 “Miss Echo” Day Linda Kidd Sophomore Class Brenda Meadows Eighth Grade The 1973 Miss Echo Day began at 9:30 in Wag- ner Auditorium with the crowning of Patty F. Each Junior and Senior had their own special My Love. Adding to the splendor of the night was the romantic music provided by The Classical Vantage. Mountain Empire District Champions 1972 The victorious Bland Rockets display their trophies following the Mountain Empire District Tournaments. The Rockets climaxed their successful season with a 75-58 win over Fort Chiswell to secure the Mountain Empire District Championship. 10 Coach Samuel F. Groseclose accepts the Mountain Empire District Sportsmanship Plaque. Glen Tate (55) and Stephen Newberry (31) share the Tournament Championship trophy. Jubliant Rockets lift Stephen Newberry to cut the net from the rim following the exciting tournaments. 11 Big Walker Mountain Tunnel Opens An event of great significance was the opening of the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel which is located entirely in Bland County and serves as a connecting device for the super highway Virginia Interstate 77 between Bland and Wytheville. This road project, one of the greatest undertakings of its kind, in the history of Virginia, was officially opened for traffic on June 29, 1972. Among the more than one thousand persons attending the colorful ribbon-cutting ceremonies at the south portals of the forty-two hundred foot twin tubes, were Virginia Governor, the Honorable Linwood Holton, and former Governor, the Honorable Mills Godwin, along with officials of the Great Lakes-to-Florida-Highway Association. This ceremony was the culmination of the ground-breaking for the mammoth tunnel which took place on October 16, 1967. James A. Williams, President of the Great Lakes-to-Florida-Highway Association, and Governor Linwood Holton cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony. 12 There are some things in life that never change We love and hate, laugh and cry, win and lose, fight and surrender, but we never lose sight of the fond memories of our youth.
