THE- ECHO Bland High School, Bland, Virginia 7970 25th Edition Contents Foreword............................................ 2 Dedication.......................................... 4 Theme Opening....................................... 6 Administration......................................17 Faculty.............................................17 Seniors.............................................25 Underclassmen.......................................37 Elementary..........................................47 Activities..........................................53 Organizations.......................................63 Athletics ..........................................71 Advertisements......................................77 FOREWORD In 1936 a group of teachers and students had an idea to make a yearbook of Bland Hjgh School. After much discussion and disagreement, a name was finally chosen. Bland High's yearbook would be called The Echo. Down through the years The Echo has provided a history of our school and a source of reference for all. With this 25th Anniversary Edition of The Echo there come many changes. The Staff felt that, in order to celebrate a quarter of a century of yearbooks, this special edition should be a clean break from the past. We can only hope it is accepted with an earnestness equal to the pride that went into its preparation. Mr. Claude S. Stowers Dedication The process of gaining an education was no simple matter. Many things happened during the school year besides having classes. Each class faced many problems that were difficult to surmount. Time and time again we needed understanding and guidance. Whenever we had problems we knew where we could turn for help --to our sponsors. In an effort to try to repay all the kindness and assistance given us, we, the Senior Class of Bland High School, wish to dedi- cate this, the 1970 edition of The Echo to our sponsors, Mr. Claude S. Stowers, Mrs. Lois O. Crabtree, and Former Sponsor Mrs. Carolyn B. Bane. Mrs. Lois O. Crabtree 4 Echo Ball — 1970 Every year since 1965 a girl from each class in high school is elected by her class to head the subscription drive for The Echo. The girl who sells the most yearbook subscriptions becomes Miss Echo. The Echo Ball is held in her honor and she is awarded a pin and crown. Refreshments are served and dancing is enjoyed by all. Miss Sandy Green and Court -- Miss Anne Dunn, Miss Susan Tate, Miss Vickie Blanken- ship Miss Rebecca Goins (not shown). 6 7 In class or out, we lived life to its fullest. Whether we were getting our English assignment, practicing for the next basketball game, or just having a bull session in the library; we enjoyed every minute of the school year. 8 Prom 68-69 On the night of April 20, 1969, Wagner Auditorium was converted into a desert paradise complete with camels and an oasis. On this date the 1970 Senior Class pre- sented, Arabian Nights. Those attending enjoyed dancing to music presented by Sweetie and The Soul Movement. Refresh- ments were served from desert tents and one could not help but imagine Ali Baba and The Forty Thieves watching from the shadows. The classroom is where all the work is done. Every- thing else is given a back seat while all attention is given to the task at hand -- learning. Everyone seems to develop his ow-n style of concentrating on the subject. 12 It's not all work and no play. There are times of gaiety and folly. Every- one enjoys the county fair, school elections and programs, and just clowning around. Even school officials can find time to help out at the bingo stand or give a big smile for the pho- tographer. One Small Step For Man Slowly the white-clad figure descended the ladder. Upon reaching the bottom, he paused briefly as if uncertain of his movements. Then at 10:56 p.m. (E.D.T.) July 20,1969, U.S. Astronaut Neil Arm- strong set foot upon the moon and said, That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS WE JOURNEYED, STEERED BY FARTHEST STARS, CLIMBED OUT- WARD, CROSSED THE INVISIBLE TIDE-RIP WHERE THE FLOATING DUST FALLS ONE WAY OR THE OTHER IN THE VOID BETWEEN, FOLLOWED THAT OTHER DOWN, ENCOUNTERED COLD, FACED DEATH — UNFATHOMABLE EMPTINESS. by Archibald MacLeish Apollo 11 crew — Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. Apollo 11 liftoff at 9:32 a.m. E.D.T. July 16, 1969. Astronaut Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. descends steps of Lunar Module ladder as he prepares to walk on the moon. Flight controllers celebrate as Eagle successfully sets-down on the surface of the moon. 16 ADMINISTRATION Board Of Education Victor R. Gilly, Superintendent of Bland County Schools and Dr. Melton F. With all the rushing and costume changing, there was no time for worrying. Now we realized that all our rehearsing and work was worth it. Everyone did his best to make it one of our most successful Harvest Festivals. A square dance presented another part of American life. The second grade performs their version of an Indian dance. The Hawaiian dance is performed by the first grade. Dutch dancers from the third grade enchant all spectators. Seventh grade dances a heel and toe polka. The fifth grade appears as Mexican hat dancers. Students of the fourth grade presented a (balloon) dance. Harvest Festival Scenes Everyone who participated had a feeling of pride; but also a feeling of relief when it was over. Proud that they did their part well and relieved to know that it was a successful event. The fate of Dan McGrew is revealed by the dramatics class Larry and Barry Newberry sing a duet The Phys. Honor Students 7968-7969 In 1964, the Bland High S.C.A. established a system whereby students maintaining a 95 or above average would be presented a scholastic honor card at mid-term and if this average was kept until the end of the school year, they would be awarded a honor symbol -- a letter for first year recipients and a bar for second, third, and fourth year students.
