Heavy fog in the area pre- vented early detection of the fire and though the volunteer fire fighters made a valiant effort, the building was rendered useless. A previously started construction consisting of grade rooms and a high school gymnasium was completed shortly after September 1, 1962. The current Consolidated school session began with poor facilities, but the students are looking forward with high hopes to improved conditions. For a number of years, it has been evident that an improvement is nec- essary in the educational system in Bland County. In the spring of 1962. the state-recommended consolidation of Bland and Ceres High Schools was voted on and passed by the Board of Supervisors after much debate and amid general disagreement among the residents of the two districts. As if a final blow, on July 30, 1962, Bland Countians were startled to see flames 2 Judy Davis Subscription Editor James Sink Layout Editor John Newberry Editor Jerry Mustard Business Manager Roger Thompson Asst.
