BLAND COUNTY 100 YEARS OLD IN 1961 BLAND THE COMMUNITY CENTER WAS FIRST KNOWN AS CRAB ORCHARD. THE PLACE BECAME THE COUNTY SEAT OF BLAND COUNTY WHEN IT WAS FORMED IN 1861 UNDER THE NAME OF SEDOON, WHICH WAS LATER CHANCEO TO THAT OF THE COUNTY AT ROCKY CAP A SKIRMISH WAS FOUCHT IN CROOK'S RAID ACAINST THE VIRGINIA AND TENNESSEE RAILROAO, MAY. 1864. In 1861 Bland County was formed from portions of Wythe, Giles and Tazewell Counties. The new county was named for Richard Bland, who was a member of the House of Burgesses and one of the seven delegates from Virginia to the General Congress in Philadelphia. Bland County has an area of 369 square miles and its popula- tion in 1960 was 6,049. A site for the new Court House was selected upon the formation of the county at the 'Big Spring' at Crab Orchard. The first building, erected in 1874, was des- troyed by fire in 1888. The Court House of today was erected in 1889 and with the exception of a few addi- tions, is the same as it was then. Bland High School was built in 1917 and renovations were made on the inside in 1958. The Wagner Auditor ium was built in 1936 and the Lunch Room and Agricul- ture Buildings were added. The present enrollment is 383. 6

Principal’s Message In following the school philosophy in which we believe that the ideal school is the life-centered school, which helps each student attain an ever increasing ability to face life's perplexing problems with satisfaction and success, we, as teachers and educators hope that most students can attain this goal. We have tried to fit our curriculum to the needs of the individuals as near as we can without depriving any one student. This yearbook that you, members of the Echo Staff, are completing is part of the activities that are planned for students to take part in and to do. You have achieved success in this endeavorment. My heartiest congratulations to you for this good work and in the years that lie ahead students will receive many happy memories by going back through this year's Annual. 5
