KD is Fi i f chef P' ' '35 sl W 'WE LIVE IN A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY' By Lawrence P Watts As this is being written, many people live under the dread and fear of oppression The people of whom I speak are not living in Russia, Spain, or in count ries behind the Iron Curtain These people live in our United States Our Government is becoming in creasingly aware of the fact that though our constitu tion gives a guarantee of liberty and equality to all, many people do not and can not share with you and I this freedom and equality Other nations of Europe, Asia, and Africa, must be watching us closely to see if we believe the wordsvve have written into our con stltution and say in our pledge to our flag If we do believe them we will certainly practice them This group of Americans are found predominantly in the south I refer to the Negro who was born into a civilization which will not accept him on an equal basis He is now asking that we Dive to him those rights and priviledges which go with citizenship You live in a democracy where you may think, feel, or speak as you wish You may prefer to remain silent Those Ire the things which make democracy work I do challenge you to think carefully and to form your opinions cautiously for you are dealing man lives Remember, many Negroes fought in vice of our country, many more gave their wars so that you and I might have the freedom or alter with hu the ser lives in we enjoy today Remember too, as we invite the immigrant to our shores, we tell him America is a 'Land of Oppor tunity will he not begin to judge us if we do not do our utmost to bring about equality to all, regard less of race, color, or creed? The fate of this and other countries may well lie in our solution to this situation I believe in our youth of today, and believe that with the help of the Bible, they will find the right answer From our his tory books, we read that a fam1ly's most prized pos session was their Bible Those families came to Amer ica to establish religious freedom and freedom of speech. Today we should uphold those same truths for which our forefathers fought so valiantly. We find that the Bible played a great role in the early colo- nial life, since being able to read the Bible was one of the big reasons for going to school and learning to read. Could we have forgotten this or just become negligent? I, 57km 1'1
