X ldu: J 'DEMOCRATTC LIVINGn -Q: ,R By James Dawson W:- ' 5 O, : pilggf is ii? fl' 'To think clearly and honestly, t read thought fully, to communicate effectively, nd to listen in telligently, have always been basic to the oerpetua tion of democratic ways of living were developed by a Commission on the English Curricu lum of the National Association of Teachers of Eng lish How well these terms apply to the reasons that students attend school we need all of the above characteristics molded into our personalities in order that we may take our place in society and make our contribution to society These thoughts Since the beginning of our country we have stressed the idea that a democratic society best suits our needs We think of such a society as one in which we are priviledged to make our decisions and to choose our way of living within certain limitations I hold that this is as it should be but also think that the rizhts and priviledges in a democratic society also give us obligations that we must fulfill How can we have rights and priviledaes unless we can educate ourselves and associate to the fact that we are oblivated to work for these privlledaes? de, as studerts and teachers, must be willing to discipline our selves so that our obligations soon become priviledves If we are honest with olrselves and associates we will soon be able to make decisions that will contribute to society How true that some of us have been endowed so that we do not all contrl bute at the same rate we can all make an honest ef fort and this is where many students and adults are lacking You will realize this as vou take your place in society You will remember instructions, plead ings, and challenges that came to you during you school days My hope is that you have been successful in retaining the advice of your instructors, parents, and friends, that you have separated the grain from the chaff and that you ha e pleasant memories of your Bland School Days I would not necessarily wlsh that we become world famous, only that each day we have noble thoughts, do noble deeds, and become respected citizens, who, in the future, wil' be interested in the young people of our society The xx' J . 1 nw! ...N-.- nun.. .......- , .-3 .-.Qu-. .1 lllliill s ' Jr. .-nu.. lx V ix ' gs ., X 8 X Q f Q 'j' w 4' I ' ,I .0 'O ..n .
