Front: Kim Jordan, Proj Chm.; Timmy Pickard, Pres.; and Dawn Bullard, V. Pres. The senior class of 1988, the largest graduating class from BHS, symbolizes the “best” of the best. Leadership, as well as friendship, has been the foundation of their success. Throughout this year, the class has participated in many activities and events. The Sr. class won the first annual Battle of the Classes. This proved to be a fun day as well as a main fund raiser. Other fund raisers this year included a dance, selling sweatshirts, candy grams, and championship wrestling. The Sr.-faculty softball game was a lot of fun, and once again, the Srs. proved to be the best. They will always remember their Sr. year as one of the best of their lives. Their ToP shamu was a ,avori‘e for evCTP°ne- flight departed at 8:30 headed for Dallas. After a short layover and a quick plane change, they were headed for San Antonio. After arriving, they went to the Alamo for a quick tour and short discussion. The next stop was the riverwalk where they strolled along the river and browsed in the shops wishing they had brought more money. From the riverwalk, the Srs. boarded the bus and headed for La Margarita where they ate lunch and enjoyed the Mariachi band. After a large Mexican feast, they shopped at the straw market. The final destination was Sea World. This was the most favorite stop of the trip. We all went our separate ways and went to the attraction of our choice. The favorite attraction was Shamu the killer whale. We also saw many other shows such as the dolphin show, the walrus, otter and seal show, and the water skiing show. Everyone also enjoyed trying to get into kiddyland to play on the slides and jump in the rubber balls. At 7:00 pm everyone boarded the bus to head for the airport, only to later find we had left Mr. Greteman. Our plane arrived at OKC at 12:00 pm. Everyone was exhausted and ready to get home. This trip was very special to all of us, and it will be one of our greatest memories as a class. 31 This Was the Time OF OUR LIVES (Right) Mike, Heath, and Jeff make some new friends at Sea World. Even though there were many disagreements they still had a great year. The girls had an awesome Christmas party by getting together to watch movies and just have fun. The guys, on the other hand, gathered to hear “Daddy J” rap. They got off to a great start by placing 2nd in the Battle of the Classes, and ended up with the most extraordinary Prom. Our local newspaper was also filled with a lawsuit brought by a former police chief who had been fired, and the instability in the city government was the topic of conversation for awhile. Soon, though, things seemed to fall into a routine and attention was then taken to school activities. We began the year with a new superintendent who has great vision for the future of our school. The Christmas season brought tragedy when one of our seniors was injured seriously while playing with friends. Christmas Eve also gave us one of the worst ice and snow storms to hit Oklahoma, and many of us, for the first time, saw how it was in the “good old days” without electricity. National elections seemed to dominate in ’88, and many of us voted in our first election. Nationally, we witnessed maybe the equivalent of Watergate with the Iran-Contra hearings, and Oliver North dominating summer television. It was the 200th birthday of our Constitution and it had to function during this time. We had several scandals of famous people, including Democratic candidate Gary Hart who later resigned from the Presidential race. And, of course, the media had a field day with the problems of Jim and Tammy Bakker of the PTL club. The NFL football season was altered with the strike and the word “scab” took on a new meaning. Everyone became aware of a new commercial celebrity, the super sales dog Spuds Mackenzie. Surrogate motherhood became familiar to us as Marybeth Whitehead fought for custody of a child got known to us as Baby M. We also had another child in our lives, Jessica McClure from Texas, who was lifted from a well where she had been for 58 hours. Even though we experienced a stock market crash and our economy seemed less secure, we witnessed s Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, visit our United States in an attempt to reduce arms and to increase the interest for peace — at the end of our school year our President Ronald Reagan returned the visit to the Soviet Union, and for the first time we watched live news coverage from Russia. It was a year full of events! The year was a mixture of the old and the new. Music ranged from the loud sounds of Def Leppard to the country sounds of Randy Travis and Reba McEntire. Movies ranged from Vietnam stories such as Platoon, to adult drama as Fatal Attraction, to teenage love as Dirty Dancing. Kids had expensive tastes in cars as Iroc, Ferrari, BMW, etc. were the favorite although not many kids drove these. The favorite place to eat was in Norman at Taco Bell. The cost of a hamburger was aboyt $1.75 and a gallon of gas about $.90. Styles were also hard to put a finger on with skirts ranging from ankle-length to the mini, with even the split-skirts making a comeback. Neatness seemed to be the main key as students kept up with the latest fashions in an attractive way. Short haircuts on guys, sometimes even reminisces of the old “Flat top” reoccurred. Rolled-up jeans were worn by guys either with the popular Reeboks, sometimes black, sometimes red, or with loafers or deck shoes and no socks. “Units” were a new trend for the girls and consisted of squares of knot sewn together and worn upside down, backwards, tied in knots, and in two or three layers. Students at BHS definitely have “what it takes.” 142 What It Takes wfVv 144
