IS OBVIOUS A. J. Terrell High School Blanchard, OK 73010 Copyright 1986 Volume 37 Amidst balloons “flying high with the Lions,” sophomore candidate Seana Warren was crowned 1985 football queen by co-captain Kelly Chambers. Though the Lions did not win their homecoming game, there were plenty of winners on the field at halftime as the three attendants, three candidates, escorts, band, and pep club gathered for coronation ceremonies. Winners in the float competition included: first place — eighth grade; second place — senior class; third place — junior class. The obvious difference in a “ big school and a small school” is the spirit. Although BHS is 3A, we still consider ourselves small in size — but, oh, that spirit! Players, coaches, parents, and fans all get into the act of raising spirit on the field, on the court, and in the stands. While some students use their lunch hour to study, others to visit with friends, and some to sleep, there are those animals who become totally absorbed in eating. James Claborn, Les Willard, and Brad Loftin seem to be racing through their meal. It was a spaghetti-eating race sponsored by the H.S. music department, and it drew a variety of competitors. (Above) Tony James seems to have slowed down, but then notice how many bowls he has. (Above right) Greg Ogle, Meat Hall, and Allen Auld take this eating business seriously as Larry May and Mimi Cove offer encouraging words. Pete Frullo watches in admiration as Jimmy Parsons appears to have devised a method of raking it in that seems to work. The more conventional way to spend lunch is with friends. There are many possibilities ranging from fast food places, restaurants, delis, the paddy wagon, the cafeteria, and the Coke machine in the gym. On nice days, students would rather get a quick bite and spend time outside writh friends. Teachers Ms. Collier, Ms. Roller, and Ms. Boutwell enjoy quiet away from the kids as they enjoy the springlike weather. Kathy Winnard, Alicia Hyatt, Kim Berkshire, and Sheila Defibaugh decide to catch up on honu-uork during lunch break. (Far left): Trent Stephens and Laura Brooks practice the hug 'em close” dance — this has got to be better than lunch — (l ft): Surely Terry May isn't getting papers to study during lunch. He must be helping one of his fellow students. Styl c ore influenced by TV, Movies, Magazines, and Athletes. odcrn fashion from blue jeans to ties, from sweats to long dresses, from tennis shoes to Ropers — has hit BUS. It seems most anything is “in now, and Blanchard students sport a wide spec trum of attire. Sweatshirts (shown by Jane Bowser helou left) and jeans (helou ) conic in all colors, sha|H-s, and sizes and are still probable the most common fashion. k Top to Bottom From head to toe, styles play an important role in students’ lives. Hair has always been a major fashion trend, and it is straightened, permed, shaved, razor cut, bobbed, and feathered. Tina Roberts and Stacy Hunt (right) wear the classic pony tail and the modern bi-level. (Below) Ms. Boutwell and Jeana Robertson show Trent Stephens and the bi-level, Brad Loftin and the average cut, and Jody Davis and the “Boz” — three common hairstyles on guys. Behind those Foster Grants is Kcri Knip-pelmier (below right). Sunglasses arc a popular accessory for high school students in a variety of styles and colors. Which way do we go? Hush puppies are comfortable run around shoes — especially in cold weather. Most BHS students ally themselves with either OU or OSU, and this year was no different. OSU seemed to gain in numbers of supporters until OU won the football national championship, and everyone became a Sooner fan. (Left) Mrs. Ruse and Billy Hum show their pride while (Mou ) Debi Guess models an Orange Bowl sweatshirt. (Below left) Feet are now adorned in fashion, too, in boots, loafers, tennis shoes, saddle oxfords, and pumps. WiIJN'A' ik Leslie Willard was the first BHS student to get a Boz — the old time flat-top named after OU player Brian Bosworth. However, when Les got a little adventurous in shaping up the sides, his dad decided to help him even out the cut with the Kojak” look. Mr. Caldwell then helped Ixs a little by painting hair on his head. None of this seemed to inhibit Willie s personality, though. Nothing makes sense, and everything will change. Soon, nothing we knew will be the same. It's strange that one night of your life could mean so much. After graduation, maybe we'll keep in touch. It's a shame the friendship we’ve shared through the years must now end in a stream of tears. Soon, all of our hopes, fears, and dreams, will hang like a thread from an unraveled seam. Through school all we wanted was to get out. and learn what life and growing up was about Now the curtains are closing, and the end is near. What will BHS be like without us here? And the time has come and the end is near. — Donya Brooks — Officers: Pres., Rodney Swanson: Sec., Donya Brooks: Reporter, Celissa Southard: Vicc-Pres., Steve Dilbeck; Proj. National Lampoon’s Senior Class Vacation It was probably the longest day the seniors as a class have ever spent together. The travel started out real early for some ol the seniors. The first bus was to leave at the dreaded hour of 4:00 a.m. and the second was to leave at 6:00 a.m. Those that left on the earlier bus had Todd Sorrels and the boys for entertainment the entire way to Tulsa. Most people wanted to sleep but that was a joke. (Bottom): Leslie has had just about enough. (Middle): As the seniors waited patiently, they stood in line to receive their tickets. So the Seniors waved goodbye and entered the terminal to their flight with United Airlines. — (Far Bottom)(Above Right): Carmen is a little impatient and is wanting to get the plane moving; whereas, Lenny is cool but still a little nervous — (Far right). One of the many sights the seniors saw was the Cave of the Winds. (Far right): Mr. Ricks awaits his turn up to the Cave. (Right): Laura entering the Cave with much enthusiasm. On the buses, the travel from place to place took about an hour, so most ever ’ one took a little nap as Brad, Carmen, and Tabby exemplify. (Left): One of the stops was Mt. Manitou and there, the seniors went on a 15 minute ride on the incline up the mountain. They had a snack there and then it was to the Cave of the Winds, the last stop of the day before the tired seniors were to eat dinner. (Middle): Some senior kiddies playing in the jailhouse in front of the Cave, while waiting for their turn to enter. (Far middle): Inside the Cave people scrunched to take pictures of stalagmites and stalactites. CASA BONITA The big finale of the day was eating at Casa Bonita in Denver. (Far middle): On the outside Casa Bonita looks like a large Mexican castle (Bottom): and inside was like a small village with ail the trimmings, such as food. Mike, of course, is in the chow line (Middle): Cliff divers every 15 minutes add to the excitement (Middle): and just plain fun. (Far bottom): Jimmy is blowing in Mr. Ricks' ear while Mr. Ricks looks around hoping that no one is watching. As people come and go, one of the first things they will see is the beautiful fountain behind Carmen, Todd, and Tabby — (Top Right). They throw their pennies in hoping their wishes will come true. (Middle): The bus ride back to the airport meant the day had come to an end and the trip had been a successful mission. ►3 Good Friends and Good Times The Sr. Christmas party featured good food and flirting. Mrs. Stokes would like for Rodney to be less bashful; Traci and Kevin pretend to ignore each other; and Carmen, Lance, and Celissa ham it up as usual. (Far left): Kim and Tina swap stories. (Left): At the annual faculty-Sr. soft-ball game, a few “celebrities showed up — Amelia Earhart (Donya Brooks), Raggedy Ann (Cindy Holmes), and Mighty Mouse (Lesli Courtney). Terry May, Mike Woods, Mike Hair, and John Outon discuss strategy during the game. The senior boys are fired up in hopes of a victory, but the faculty stay undefeated. It could be a game, joke, or just gossip — just being together is fun! Will Never Be Forgotten Juniors More responsibilities made a difference in '86 for the Juniors, from raising money for the prom, to getting ready for ACT tests. With the help of sponsors Mr. I.undy, Mr. Case-, Ms. Peek ham, Ms. Roller, Mrs. Kipp, and Mr. Hale, the Juniors won 3rd place sith their float, Invade the Racers. Shelley Wigley was the class candidate for football homecoming. (Be ou left): No, Kevin and Micheal, you didn't eat all that food. That food goes for StuCo. She is up early every morning at the polo grounds east of Blanchard by 4:30. There she cleans stalls and exercises horses for 3 hours, after which she showers and gets ready for school. After school it is the same schedule for another 3 hours. Kari has been showing quarter horses since she w as 5 years old. Through her love of horses she got her job at the stables, and from that she learned the game of polo. Although there isn't yet an established women’s league, she has played in several practice games. Kari has also competed in English pleasure, show jumping, and hunter jumping. She hopes to qualify for the World Quarter Horse Show next year. “I plan to go to Iowa State Univ. and I would really like to try to make their equestrian team,” says Kari. The sophomores were busy raising money by sponsoring dances, working concession stands, and selling pom pon characters. The class’ candidate, Seana Warren, was the ’85 football queen. The annual Christmas party this year featured a movie, Ghostbusters. Sponsors for this “different” class are Mrs. Vermillion, Mrs. Wood, Miss Boutwell, Mr. Caldwell, Mr. Wion, and Mr. Wakeman. This talented sophomore has had no formal art training except what he has received in art classes at BHS. He has probably drawn every conceivable shape of a Lion and does not mind drawing pictures for others if he has the time. According to Eric, his favorite picture is a still life with jars, a big old milk pitcher, and a bowl underneath. This year for Mrs. Betty Lewis’ trip to the Gator Bowl, Eric designed a Pistol Pete riding an alligator and throwing a lasso around ABC. Eric's mom is also somewhat of an artist and when asked if she helps him, he said, “She is my critic.” His advice to other aspiring artists is try to find the best art college, which is exactly what Eric plans to do. The freshman float was the Challenger, saying the Racers are no challenge. As a first, the freshmen held a Christmas party, where the Herron Brothers Band entertained. As a fundraiser, the class worked the concessions at all the high school girls’ softball games. Being 90 strong and growing, they hope to make a big difference to high school. Vic now builds his own mostly out of lightweight cardboard and balsawood. His largest rocket was a two-stage, three foot rocket. The longest flight covered about two thousand feet. Vic plans to further his study of rocketry in college and hopes to be a pilot. When asked if he would someday like to be a part of the space shuttle program, Vic answered, “By the time 1 get old enough to be on the space shuttle, it will probably be obsolete.” Who knows — one day we may see Vic on the moon! 41 Regina Rogers Wade Rogers James Saye Shellic Simer Shannon Sintic Mandi Staggs Gentry Stambaugh Rene Stepp Becky Stockton Chris Vrem Lavonna Watson Kim Wigle Kimberly Willett Richard Willett Tammy Williams Jeff Winn Janet Woody Bevely Young (Right): Michelle Crawley looking overwhelmed by the freshman turnout on enrollment day. The council participated in two district meetings and the state convention. Members of the council met during the summer with school officials to help establish the policy to allow students to go off-campus for lunch, and in the spring the council helped to bring about a policy allowing students to wear “jams” to class. The obvious difference in any school is its active student council. 105 award-winning Band year for musicians Bottom Row (L-R): Robert Cason, Seana Warren, Terri Long, Robyn Fugett, Lori Willard, Jamie Phares, Lucretia Buller, Kelley Shaw, Cyndy Holmes. 2nd Row (L-R): Christy Green, Robert Mangus, Jason Dedman, Johnny Yarbrough, Mike Ellidge, Chris Lester, Anthony Bottoms, Rodney Swanson, Eric Mills. 3rd Row (L-R): Lynn Ellis, Patrick Hutchison, Jesse Giles, Aaron Dershum, Mark Moore, Clint Wood, Donna Albers. They also hold the record for having 27 original seniors. On May 18th, the traditional Baccalaureate was held in the cafetorium, the sermon being given by Rev. Les Thompson. Donya Brooks, Tammy Pitts, Beth Clayton, and Kelly Chambers sang “May You Always ’ and “Up Where We Belong . The final walk was graduation, the end of their school years and the beginning of the rest of their lives. For some it was a relief, and for others questions like “What do I do now?“ ran nonstop through their heads. A portion of the seniors sang “That's What Friends Are For and then a solo was given by Donya Brooks, “Wind Beneath My Wings . As the end neared, names were read, diplomas were recieved from Preslie Cole, and tassies were turned by Donna Stokes. After the graduates of 86 marched off to “Pomp and Circumstance , they met at the 50 yard line to receive balloons, and on the count of three the balloons were released. It was said that the balloons were a symbol of their class. Some went up quickly, some slowly, some drifted up and down, and some just went down. But no matter where they end up they will always have their memories. They were the “Class of 86 . Seniors singing That’s What Friends Are For ’ at graduation. (Far middle): Celissa and Brad (Bottom): Julie and Mike (Right): Donya marches right in. The Class Through the year, the class of 1986 has been through a lot together. We have lost many friends and gained new ones in their place. In 1973 the class of 1986 enrolled in Mrs. Miller's kindergarten classes in the Happy House. Out of the seniors who will graduate tonight, twenty-seven are original seniors w'ho started out in the Happy House. As a class, we have made scarecrows, hunted Easter eggs, had holiday parties, competed against each other in the Little Olympics, elected class officers, elected attendants and candidates for various homecomings, constructed and stuffed many floats, eaten at Molly Murphy's, attended banquets and proms, played softball and basketball against the faculty, flown to Colorado, and most of all, loved each other throughout everything we have done. 1 am very proud to be a member of this year's graduating class. For those of you who have seen our senior panel, you will know' that the Statue of Liberty is standing proud in the upper center of the panel. 1986 is the 100th anniversary of the statue. We chose the Statue of Liberty to represent our class because we feel that the class of 1986, like the United States of America, is filled with love, unity, and strength. I would like to recognize some very special people who helped us through it all. First, our class sponsors: Donna Stokes, Geneile Richey, Betty Lewis, Gw’ineth Brooks, Rob Lamm, and Dusty Ricks. Second, the parents of the members of the class of 86. Mom and Dad, w'e love you. And last, the teachers who have tried to educate us throughout the years. These are some of the people responsible for helping to make the largest and one of the best classes to graduate from Blanchard. I remember the day after Halloween in 1981. The class of '86 w'as in the seventh grade and all of our upperclassmen were joking about something my cousin and I had done on Halloween night. We were running around supposedly trick-or-treating, but instead, were, like most, having shaving cream fights. We became bored, so we w'rote class of '86 and Class of 88 with shaving cream on the streets. Everyone found this humorous, because at the time 1986 and 1988 were a long time off. But, time has flown around us, and the class of 1986 is about to say good-bye to the Blanchard schools. The memories of our days at Blanchard will forever live inside of us. I would like to close with some advice not only to underclassmen but to everyone: Make the most of today, because tomorrow isn't far aw'ay.
