Shawn has been an integral part of the basketball and baseball teams. A streak-shooting forward, Shawn aided the Lions in many of their victories. He served as senior escort during basketball homecoming. On the mound, Shawn was one of the Lions' leading pitchers, helping the baseballers to state tournaments. Shawn exemplified the All-Around boy. Participating in activities is the key to selection for all-around girl, and Julie Glimp was very active in many aspects of school life. Julie participated in basketball, track, and softball, which made two trips to the state tournament during her playing time. Pep club was a big part of her life as she served as cheerleader for two years. Julie was also a member of the science club, biology club, and Beta Club, where she was secretary. With the interest in band declining, Mr. Cason recognized the need to put more pride and dedication into the program. And the best way to do that was to put more demand on the students. When they ralized it was important to him, it became important to them. Along with new music and new routines came some innovative entertainment, and it was exciting to wonder what new stunt the band had. From the initiation to the banquet, the band made great strides and became a source of pride for all. The girls entertained at football games and were highlighted with a fire baton act. After a year of experience, these two should really be great! Rifle team girls attended camp at East Central University in Ada last summer — They had a car wash to raise money for uniforms and worked hard to organize their squad. Team members were Kelley Shaw, Cyndy Holmes, and Tammy Pitts. The flag corps under the direction of Mrs. Cindy Cason began work in the summer after a few members returned from camp. Even though the corps was small in number, thy improved through hard work and dedication. Team members were P. Cove, K. Steele, A. Sharp Lestarge. and T. Cox. 55 Hr. High band makes big noise Playing an instrument is difficult enough, but for a junior high student it is sometimes frustrating, but often fun. One must learn to read music, hold the instrument properly, reach the keys, look at the director, and stay in line! Seventh and eighth graders comprise the junior high band and they performed at the junior high football games. They were also included in the annual spring concert. Many band students received scholarships to summer band camps and will help to increase the members and quality of the high school band. Bottom row: (L-R)- A. Shaw, J. Crabtree, C. Kelly, R. Anytime there are 60 junior high students together anywhere, there is a lot of enthusiasm and that is especially true with junior music. Students must learn to read music and their parts, accordingly. Under the direction of Mrs. Lynch the junior high chorus presented a Christmas concert and a spring concert. They also performed at music contest where several individuals and small groups received excellent ratings. The music room is where the action is. Freshman Tina Self, Miss Melody, represents the junior music group in the annual homecoming parade. Every Friday night in September through November people gather at the local football field to cheer on those gridiron heroes. They see all the work of the teams and the pageantry of the cheerleaders and bands, but the pep club seems to fade in with the fans. While many surrounding schools are dropping their organized pep club, the Lion pep club is going strong decorating halls, selling ribbons, building bonfires, making candy boxes, and promoting school spirit. There is a lot of work, along with long hours, to being a good pep club member and not much glory. Why do they belong then? Junior high pep club! With over 90 members, the junior high pep club was the largest in the school and played a big part in junior high school spirit. Although the junior high was included in high school pep assemblies and was “alone for its own, it virtually out-yelled and out-spirited everyone. The members decorated halls and lockers each week and made the big spirit sign with each grade in charge of a week’s decorations. The highlight of the year probably occurred at the Newcastle pep assembly when some Freshman girls performed their rendition of “Tell me ’bout the boys from Blanchard city”. Beginning at a workshop last summer, the staff made plans for the '8 5 yearbook. The year began with orienting new members and an ad campaign, which proved to be the most successful ever. School-day pictures, also a hassle, went rather smoothly and group pictures, always a “bad day”, ironed out all right. After winning the school year motto contest, the staff used the theme Building with Pride as the theme for this year’s book. “It is a full year’s job,” says staff member Chandra Bridges, and no one really realizes all the technical work involved in publishing a history of the school year.” Despite all the overtime, pressure, and “do it over”, the staff was pleased with its output. But the Lions seemed to peak during the playoffs when it counted, and made another trip to Tulsa. There they felt the bitter defeat of a 4-3 game with Blackwell, but plan to continue building a winning tradition. 82 Shawn Orme — P DH ’84 All State Tourney ’84. ’85 Little All-City Hon Mention Dwain Foster — OF ’85 Little All-City 2nd team ’85 All Region team ’85 All-State Hon. The ability to plan, to carry out, to achieve. These are the qualities parent and teachers hope to develop in a teen-ager by the time he or she leaves high school for the “adult world” This year’s senior class exhibited those qualities as they served as the leaders in virtually every organization in school. That may seem like a common trait not too unusual in most schools, but in today’s world of high school seniors who attend school only half a day, it is more usual to find apathy and indifference toward school activities. With the selection of the senior class officers, the seniors served notice that they would accept their places as leaders of the school. The seniors raised money throughout the year with concession stands, by selling pins and stickers, by selling cheese and candy, and by having a luau dance. All this went to help finance their senior trip to Six Flags. Although they did not defeat the faculty in the annual basketball game, they did give them the best game yet. All in all, they were a real “class act”. Ms. Peckham. and Ms. Roller, the sophomores worked on their float, using the theme Fourth of July. Amy Martin, soph., said We had lots of fun making our float. I would say that Tracy (Savage — former president) had the best idea and was determined to get the job done. Debra Bridwell was the class candidate for football homecoming and Stacie Hager was the class candidate for basketball homecoming. The sophs raised money by selling hats during the football season, from which they realized $400 profit. They also worked concession stands and raffled a cake to make a good start on their fund-raising activities. The largest class in the schools history, with as many as 110 throughout the year, definitely made an impression. Their float entry in the parade depicted a Valentine theme with hearts and cupids and their attendant Melanie McCraw. The eighth grade was active in football, junior high band, pep club, basketball, and baseball. When ‘‘neon colors, wild prints, and short pants” hit the fashion scene, the eighth graders were among the first to “put on the duds.” Monty Davis, resident 8th grader, is glad to be out of the 7th grade because now we know what’s going on. No more recesses and long lunch periods, but lockers, class and teacher changes, and more homework. But there were also new “fun” things, too. Like pep club, athletics, music contests, assemblies, and Mrs. Lewis. For their first class homecoming, the seventh graders chose Sarah Green as their attendant and St. Patrick’s Day as their theme for their float — also a new experience. Terry Booth, an active 7th grader was asked what was different about 7th grade. “The teachers don't watch over you all the time, and we get to go off campus to eat lunch. It’s also fun to switch rooms every hour, at least it's fun after the first week or so.” Sarah Green 1984-85 Football Attendant. C. Dehaven D. Denwalt T. Dockery D. Dove J. Eastgate F. Teresa Madden Class President Julie Glimp Salutatorian Faith Taylor Valedictorian Shawn Orme Valedictorian Scott Mills Valedictorian When the construction is complete 1985 was a year of changes, not only in Blanchard, but in the state and nation. A new surge of patriotism and heroes emerged at the 1984 Olympics. We celebrated with Mary Lou Retton and our own Bart Conner, and we agonized with Mary Decker. In the fall elections, we saw President Reagan re-elected and the first woman, Geraldine Ferraro, run for vice-president. In international affairs, the fighting in Nicaragua was a top issue. The term “Star Wars no longer meant the movie, but the concept of a space station for nuclear defense. We also re-lived the horrors of the Vietnam War with its tenth anniversary. Probably the most moving occurrence was the extreme drought and famine in Ethiopia. And, Americans answered the call, partly through the USA for Africa, a one-time gathering of top rock stars to make a recording with proceeds going to send aid to Africa. The main concerns in our state seemed to center on the shortfall in government money brought on by a collapse in the oil and gas industry. Many banks and businesses closed. Election time brought the passing of pari-mutuel betting on horse racing and eventually liquor-by-the-drink. Probably the most shocking event was the murder of several people in the Geronimo bank in southwest Oklahoma. Locally, enrollment and building increased as a new shopping center was built. The most controversy surrounded the idea of moving the post office. Of course, the city streets were always a topic of conversation. Yes, 1985 was a year of change, locally and nationally. As things change, we hope a part of your life is captured in this yearbook. Clint and Houston clean out their lockers. The home ec room shows signs of desertion. Fads, trends, and fashions have always been a part of teenage life and 1985 was no different. Blanchard teen-agers seemed to know and observe and styles — no one would want to be labeled a nerd. So these are some of the “hot items of the day. For fashion, jeans are still “in” accompanied by the ever-present tennis shoes, which include Nikes, New Balance, Reebok, Converse, and Of course, deck shoes vogue, but usually Puma, were still in without socks and with shorts. The traditional buttondown oxford cloth is a good buy, while OP probably leads in the t-shirt pack. The “izod and little alligator were rarely seen, but Polo was still alive. Girls turned from shrinking-to-fit Levi's to cropped designer jeans in stripes or faded colors. These were usually topped with a cotton sweater which often showed an undershirt underneath. “Sweats , usually reserved for the gym, be- came acceptable attire anywhei and were often in pastel colors an decorated with puff paint. At bar quet time girls were decked out i: strapless formals with layers c ruffles, “just like mother used t wear. And the newest fashion the end of the school year was th unisex “jamms , bright Hawaiia print walking shorts. And to to those off — what else? Dark plasti sunglasses, a la Tom Cruise. And what about spare time fun Aside from school activities, muci time was spent “cruisin’ , which i similar to the ancient “draggin main , and the route now wen through the bank parking lo When the weather was nice, ther was always a crowd at the courts’ where almost everyone could get dunk and where you had to wai your turn on Sunday afternoon! When the weather was cold, the fa vorite pasttime of the girls was new trend, the tanning salo: where girls paid money to lie on bed of hot lights to get the effect o a day at the beach. Of course, the old stand-b would be a movie, which by noi cost $4.00 or a hamburger, friei and coke which cost over $2.5C But that seemed mild in compari son to the price of a concert ticke which usually cost around $ 1 5.00 No, it was not cheap being teenager in 1985. Letter jacket cost about $100 and class ring might rang from $80 to $ 1 80. Sen ior pictures and an nouncements, on th average, might go a high as $ 1 50 each. Am the price of an '85 Lioi yearbook was $ 15 - who could be withou one? JOSTENS
